Grey A.A. Meeting Mr P. C. Heaphy (President) was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association when there were also present Dr. W. McKay, Captain F. N. Whitmore, Messrs M. J. Fogarty, T. Jacobs, A. Glen, W. B. Caulton, the Patrol Officer (Mr J. Chapman) and Secretary (Mr W. F. Harley).

Capt. E. D. Iles forwarded his resignation as a member of the Association, owing to his departure from the West Coast. The resignation was accepted with regret. The chairman said that Captain Iles had taken much interest in his work, and had always had a pleasing disposition about it. Mr Heapny also wished Captain Iles every health and happiness and moved that a letter be forwarded to him thanking him for the interest he had taken in his work while a member of the Association. The secretary reported on the splendid assistance given by Station 3ZR during the flood period and also in supplying information. He added that the only fault was that the station did not cover more than 30 miles in area around Greymouth with satisfaction and in many points of the Coast there were “black outs”. The chairman moved that a small Sub-Committee be formed to discuss the matter with the Director of the station.

The secretary stated that since the last meeting he had Springs Junction with the Chief Postmaster and inspected the place and a very strong case had been put to the heads of the Department to erect a public telephone at Roger’s Store. The matter had been put to the Post and Telegraph Department, and he hoped that it would be finalised within the next few weeks. A letter of thanks was received from an Auckland motorist for the courtesy and assistance given to him during the flood period enabling him to leave Greymouth. The chairman said that the road to South Westland was open and that traffic could go down as far as Karangaroa. The road through Arthur's Pass was open from there to Bealey although it was only good for day motoring. Regarding the repairs to the Aratika road damage it was decided to write to the County Engineer Captain Whitmore saying that the 'damage was due to the raising of the flood gates at the Kaimata dam: It was decided to write to the County Council expressing appreciation of th© expeditious manner in which flood damage on the various roads had been repaired.
