WAIUTA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Mr John Collins who has been an inmate of the Reefton Hospital for some months has been discharged and has returned home. Miss Pat Darley (Dunedin) arrived on Monday evening on a holiday visit to her mother Mrs J. Connors. Messrs D. Jobhng and A. Cruickshank who left here some eighteen months ago, under engagement to a mining company in New Guinea have both been inmates of hospital recently. Mr Jobling contracted fever while Mr Cruickshank is suffering from a shake. Both are making satisfactory progress, and intend returning to New Zealand at an early date.

Messrs S'. P. Williams (President), J. McGregor (Secretary); Inangahua Miners’ Union and J. Mitchell President Waiuta Labour Party) were' week-end visitors to Takaka for the Motucka I.R.C. meeting.

Mr G. S. McGallan who has been paying a brief business visit to Christchurch has returned.

Mrs Les Harvey has left on a holiday visit to Wellington and Otaki. The Waiuta Sports Club; held a successful meeting on the Recreation Ground on Saturday. There was a large attendance, and ideal weather conditions. The arrangements were well carried out, and credit is due to the energetic secretary Mr F. Thorn and his committee for the manner in which the sports were conducted. Mr T. Sullivan’s loud speaker system was installed on the ground, and enlivened proceedings during the afternoon. Results were as follows: —

Donaldson striking a good log, reg- | ish, Fluerty the back marker being I narrowly defeated. Miners’ 75yds: M. Taylor 1, R. R. Smith 2, J. Harrington 3. Ten competed. Married Ladies’ Race: Mrs C. Mann 1, Mrs S. Stephens 2. Single Ladies’ Race: Miss B. McGuiness 1, Miss Venus 2. Ladies’ 1 Stepping Chain: Mrs C. Waters 1. Truckers’ Race: A. Goslin 1, B. Orr 12. Spilting Fuel: D. Donaldson 1. I Open 100yds: R. Lee 1, J. T. Young 2, R. R. Smith 3. Boarding House Relay: Bazley’s 1. Cigarette Race: A. Brooks 1. Ladies’ Nail Driving: Miss J. Lines 1 and 2. Guessing weight of Lamb: Mr T. McGuiness, 788, (correct weight). The various side shows reported good business, while Dunn’s merry-go-round was also well patronised. The Red Cross Ball held in the hall on Saturday evening was well attended visitors being present from all parts of the Inangahua district. The hall was tastefully decorated with birch, fern, flags, and red and white streamers, ’ the work being carried out under the supervision of Mr E. J. Allen. The music was supplied by the Embassy Orchestra, extras being contributed by Mrs H. Ord, and Mr T. Sullivan. Mr R. Bartlett had charge of the floor. The committee headed by the energetic secretary, Mrs M. Mosley worked hard, and their efforts were crammed with success. A dainty sit down supper was served.
