Racing Notes

Neglected: Instead of being favourite for the Egmont Cup on Thursday, Siegmund was. sixth in. order of fancy. The rain was the cause of his receding in favour, and he rah poorly. Not So Hot: Wings of Song is hot turning out as good, as expected. He had a big 'weight at Hawera on Thursday, but a good horse should carry weight, over five furlongs among the hacks. Good Pair: ' Captain Gale and Calliope, who wore first and one of the dead-heat-ers for second respectively in the novice event at Hawera on Thursday, are both three-year-olds by the Diacquenod horse Night Fox, and they are out of half-sisters, Takinini and Pouma respectively.' Dainty Sheila: Dainty Sheila, who failed for over eighteen months to reproduce the form she showed when winning ti maiden race at Otaki, has now scored three times in a row, and all wins have been comfortably secured. This Thomond mare might have had a much better career to date if she had been easier to keep sound. Stratford: According to an Auckland renorj the two-year-old Stratford has been added to the list and will be treated to a spell before being prepared for racing next season. He is a fullbrother to the Douro Cup whiner Lord Puck and may improve with age. So far he has had five .races without gaining a place, but he has shown sufficient promise to be worth persevering with. Soho:

Mr. G. G. Beatson’s horse Soho has h een given every chance to come right again, and he has been a daily visitor to the Hastings track since he was used by the clerk of the course at the recent Hawke’s Bay Summer Meeting. The big Defoe gelding shows no signs of his wind affliction in the light work that has been given him so far, and he is such a highclass performer over hurdles that, on a fine day, he can hold his own with the best. He' is a comparatively young horse, and it will surprise if he does not add very substantially to his winning account this season.

The Nelson Meeting: The programme for the Nelson Jockey Club’s annual meeting on April 13 and 15 has been submitted to and approved by the Conference. The cup will carry a stake of £175, including a trophy valued at £25. Juveniles:

Two juveniles who are showing dash in their work at Takanini are Aberdovey and Air Port, who are being trained by E. Pope. Aberdovey is a three-quarter sister to Kiltown, being by Cambria Park from Towyn, and her future is regarded very hopefully. Air Port is an attractive colt by Surveyor from Country Air, and he has only recently resumed after a spell necessitated by a cold.

Small Dominion List: JW Zealand has only a few ■horses entered this year for the A.J'.C. Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup at Randwick at Easter, but there area number of others in the field with a Dominion interest because of their being bred here. In the Doncaster are Beaulivre and Merry March, as well as the Domin-ion-bred High Caste. Sir Regent, Mosaic, .Limulet, Gold Salute, Bel Oiseau, Rival Hit, Gold Rod, Pen, Hilton, and Amiable. In the Sydney Cup list figure Royal Chief, Gladynev, Beaulivre and Round Up, as well as Mosaic, Sir Regent, Yours Truly, High Caste, Rival Hit, Own Folk, Elange and Pantoon.

Disqualification Removed: The disqualification for life imposed upon L. H. Wynyard in 1931 was removed this week by the Auckland District Committee. I Pleading: Pleading, who showed up early in the Lyttelton Plate at Riccarton last Saturday, was having, his first start and he may be good later on. He is a well-grown Solicitor General colt out of the Absurd Eulogy mare Eulalie, winner of the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap, and he is, owned by his breeder, Mr G. R. Macdonald, a patron of the Chokebore Lodge stable.

Phaleron: The two-year-old Phaleron, who had to be eased up owing to soreness after contesting the Great Northern Foal Stakes in December,, has rejoin--1 ed the active brigade under the care . of R. S. Bagby. He is a speedy colt ■ whose form has been encouraging, but unfortunately he has been affected with soreness on several occasions since he commenced racing. - Broughton’s Suspension: W. J. Broughton, who failed in his appeal to the Wellington district committee against his two months’ suspension, has now lodged a further appeal with the Racing' Conference, and the case will be heard by the, Conl .ference appeal judges on February 18. ) Broughton’s present'term, of suspension does not expire till March 22. If he should succeed in his final appeal he will save five week-ends at what is the most profitable part of the season for a jockey on the flat. The Duel: The Duel, who won the Halswell Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, is a six-year-old stallion by the Gr.ey- | spear horse Rapier out of the Martian—Stepdancer mare Warlove, a full-sister to Warstep and the dam previously of Amor ’ and Spoon. In the spring he was capable of giving weight and an «asy beating to Not, Out at Rangiora. Sovereign Lady: Sovereign Lady does not run many bad races on her home track, but she did so in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday. .She began slowly and never became prominent, Beau Vite: Beau Vite’s riding in Australia will probably be done by Australian joc keys. Great Night: Great Night, who won the Tria) ’ Stakes at Riccarton last Saturday, is * a four-year-old mare by Nightmarch from Acceptable’s dam Bonny Dawn, * and she is owned by her breeder, Mr 5 R. J. Murphy, of Wellington. '

Lady Bambury; Judged on the rare burst of speed she revealed in her few starts last season, it should not take long for the filly Lady Bambury to be led in a winner. At Te Awamutu several weeks ago she failed to run on, but with experience she should go much better at Te Rapa, her homo course. .

' Judgment: Apparently a good opinion is held of the northern-owned hack Judg--1 ment, for he has been entered for the open sprints at the Te Aroha fixture, as well' as in the minor grade. The gelding is, trained at Hawera, and although entered for the first day’s racing there he failed to accept. He made one appearance among the hacks at Wanganui and was unplaced. Full of Scotch: Full of Scotch, who made a name for himself as a hurdler a couple of winters ago, was entered for the ma'den handicap class at the recent meeting at Matamata, but as the conditions of that race debarred winners over jumps he was taken out prior to the handicaps. He is to take on hurdling again, for he figures in this department at the forthcoming Te Aroha fixture. rarland: Farland was to return to sprinting at Rotorua, his previous outing having been in the mile and a quarteri Matamata Cup, in which he Jed the I field for seven furlongs. It is possible | that he will eventually contest thel Auckland Easter Handicap, 1 mile, for this should be within his compass, seeing that he has already won over seven furlongs in heavy ground at Ellerslie. In the meantime, he is expected to contest the sprint races at the Waikato and Te Aroha fixtures. Marshall Hall: The two-year-old Marshal)' Hall figures prominently in events at coming northern fixtures, and he will be one of the most interesting juvenile gallopers at the autumn meetings, for .h e is a splendid type and has pace. If he reveals continued improvement in his approaching races he may have his engagement continued for the Champagne Stakes at Enersiie on Easter Saturday. Siegmund’s Winnings:

Siegmund, who won the Wanganui Cup tor the second year in succession last week, has been a good situswinner the last three s.asons, but because of the many times ho fails when expected, to do better his better performances are sometimes overlooked. A correspond-nt requests h s record, and it is therefore given, as follows:—

Among Siegmund’s better wins are the C.J.C. Great Autumn, C-J.Ci Stonyhurst Handicap, 1 mile, the Wellington Summer Handicap. 11,I 1 , miles, a treble at the Manawatu Summer Meeting in 1937 (Grandstand Handicap, 9 furlongs, Himafangi Handicap, 9 furlongs,, and Liverpool Handicap, 11 miles), and Wanganui Cup, 1 mile 41‘furlongs (twice.)

Lifeguard: The North Islander, yjfeguard, has been purchased by a Greymoutjh sportsman, and will do his Easter racing, on the West Coast. Lifeguard is an eight-year-old chestnut hor«e by Chief Ruler (sire of Royal Chief etc.), from Nasselle. Last season he had 21 starts, for five wins, and three seconds. In the previous season, he had. 11 starts, for two seconds and a third, in the 1936-37 season, nine starts, for one first, three seconds, and a third. The Chief Ruler horse is a good sprinter, and should go a middle distance on the West Coast tracks. He has been, trained in recent seasons bv H. Duiietr at New Plymouth. Platform: Amongst the two-vear-clds. produced at Riccarton was Platform, a bay colt by Nighl Raid from Fairform, the dam of Rin Tin Tin, Taurama’, Charmaine and Passaform. Platform is a nicely-turned colt trained by E. J. Ellis. Change of Ownership: Skyrena has been acquired by Mrs V. E. Turley and M. Conza, who will race her in partnership. She will he taken to the Westland meeting with others of Conza’s team, which will

remain .on the West Coast for the . Easter circuit " ,/// Bpckery ! Rockery is the name claimed, for a two-year-old bay cblt by? Dolomite from Rhea, a Chief Ruler mare. The youngster is be ng trained by,,E. C Parker at Riccarton for the Greymbuth O'yvner. Mr.F. Escott,/. Not OUt':, ? ' . .. . Not Out won the' Post Ha'ndicap so well that, he .seems suie to make additions to his .achieved success. He has now won three times on end, and five wins, two second and a third out of ten starts this season. Not Out was got. .by . Winning Hjt from Dutch Money—Dutch Clock, by Nassau — Ormolu, .by Orme.

Trotting Notes

A Versatile Performer: Following a fairly, long absence from the ranks of workers at Addington,, Gentleman Joe has made his reappearance and is carrying a great deal.more condition than 'formerly. Hjs. spell’'from the tracks was the result of ah injury received in his loose box, but he has now lost all signs of the lameness which followed his accident and his bright appearance suggests that his enforced holiday has been to his benefit. Gentleman Joe is the best double-gaited performer produced in recent years, and ; his admirers expect him to reach a high standard in both departments, his ability to mix trotting and pacing being of a calibre seldom met witty in light-harness circles.' Southern Smile Back: Some time ago it was -decided to retire Southern Smile to the matrons’ paddock, but visits tb-r Logan Derby hr 1938 and more recently to U. Scott failed to bring results, and it has been decided to place this mare back in training. It is now almost 18 months since Southern Smile was seen in action and during her absence she has' lost all racing condition. She has ' been doing light work for some. little, time now, but she is still very backward in this respect? At her best she was capable of running out a useful ' two-mile journey, but sprinting has always been her forte, and it is possible that she will again be found paying her way in this department.

Consistency: ' In his last 39 starts Toorak has won one race, has been placed second 10 times, third nine times, while thr’e times he has finished fourth.

Diamond Jim for Epsom; One of the most discussed two-year' olds in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes, to be decided on the second day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s February meeting, is the Canterbury trained Diamond Jim, by Jewel Pointer from Mountain Dell. Diamond Jim is one of three very promising two-year-olds trained by R. B. Berry and at the Addington matinee h* created a very favourable impression when narrowly beaten by his stable mate, My 'Lady Luck, whose dam Free Advice, like Mountain Dell, i« by ‘Blue Mountain King, and was bred in Auckland. Crucible at Te Rapa: The three-year-old filly Crucible, bj Jack Potts from Antelope,, who. ran third in the Victoria Handicap at Hutt Park last Saturday for hei-owner-trainer, J. D. Smith, and second in the Great Northern Trotting Derby at Epsom, has been leased by a patron of M. Stewart’s stable She was brought to Te Rapa aftei the Wellington meeting with members of Stewart’s team, who competed at the southern meeting. Crucible was bred by Smith, who raced Antelope, a mare by Great Audubon from Penelope, by Rothschild from Geoigina. Penelope won races 25 years ago in the ownership of Smith, being driven in some of her successes by- the late E. C. McDermott. ‘
