A CONTRAST.
[To The Editor]. Sir, —It is quite interesting to note the attitude of the Grey River Dredging Company through its General Manager, Mr. W. J. Radford, in granting a month’s wages to any of their employees who have enlisted. This Concern is an American company, and their patriotic gesture is to be admired, and no doubt is highly appreciated by the recipients. A striking contrast, however, is the attitude of the Blackwater Mines, Ltd., an English Company, who, so’ far, have done nothing towards the dozen employees who have so far enlisted. There is not even a definite assurance that a job will be available for those fortunate enough to return! Come on, Mr. W. J. Humphries, here is a golden opportunity of. showing the patriotism of your directors! I trust that some abler pen than mine will take this matter up, in the interests of those who are prepared to make the supreme sacrifice, while concerns such as the Blackwater Mines, Ltd., sit back and look on.— I am etc., i “RETURNED SOLDIER.’’
