Racing Notes

Trentham Scratchings: Oragori and Saxon Tor have been scratched for all engagements at Trentham.

Maidens in Action: There will be plenty of maidens seen in action at Thames, although, wth the inclusion of an event tor two and three-year-olds, several nonwinners of the latter age have been seen to take on the’new event, which has obviated the Trial’s being run m two divisions. One of the Trial candidates, Mercury Bay, who was raced at Te Awamutu and then went on to do the Taranaki circuit, where he inipressed, is a three-year-old by us ketoon from Elope. Other promising maidens to be seen out at Thames w 11 be Kilcash, Merry Vaals, FlyingVixen, Manero, and Mandalay.

Auckland Representation: Never before in the history of the Wellington Cup has Auckland been represented in the field by three three-year-olds. The trio are Gladynev, winner of the Te Awamutu Cup and Nathans Handicap, Beau Repaire, winner of the Christmas Handicap and runner-up in the Summer Cup and third in the Great Northern Derby. That the representation from the north in ■ the Wellington Centennial Cup is confined to three-year-olds once again illustrates -the present strength of this division, mention of which has been made quite often since they started to carry everything before them in the spring. The three entered for the big Trentham event are the best from here, but thek are still several smart gallopers of the age left to race at Thames. For instance, three good young sprinters in Brazen Bold, Foxmond, and Konneta were entered for the Flying Handicap, and Sunolh Is a highly-regarded- handicap performer engaged ,'at the same fixture. Hurdlers:

Usually the brush hurdle events at Thames give some idea of the number of recruits available for the jumping branch of the sport, and this week’s entries contain the names or several flat performers who have yet to make their initial over the battens.' Conspicuous among these are Te Hai, Eastern Heir," Dauber, Grand City, Haile Boy, Master Appellant, Midland, and Maereana, an of whom have shown speed on the flat. These brush hurdles rdees have not been long in existence, but already the change over from highweight races to this type of hurdling 1 has served to introduce more than one brilliant jumper.

Likely Stable: A stable that should succeed in winning a race or two at Thames is

that conducted by W. Gail, for he has two promising hacks to represent him on the provincial circuit. Clipper, a three-year-old, was a recent winner at Te Awamutu, a feature of his sucess being the game manner in which he kept his nose in front in a hectic finish over the last half-fur-long. Valdene, his stablemate, has a lot of pace and she very unlucky, but for all that her followers have lifted some very solid place dividends. J Saccone: 'The efforts of Saccone at Ellerslie recently indicate that the time for him to show in public what he nas been doing as a hurdler on the schooling tracks has not yet arrived. His success in the mile and a-quar:er hack event on the second day of the meeting with 9.0, in which he covered quite a lot of ground and then won going away, stamped him as a zery useful handicap performer in the making. He looks a good prospect for Thames. Boswell Boswell has been sent out for a short spell, but it is intended to bring him back for autumn racing. There was nothing amiss with him, but the Balboa stallion will be given a chance to freshen up. The Riverton Cup is io be one of his missions.

Doubleack Doubleack is out of action for the , remainder of the season. The Balboa gelding went amiss in his near foreleg after a gallop during the week, and it has been decided to put him aside for 12 months. At no previous stage had Doubleack shown any signs of unsoundness, and it is expected that he will’ recover with a spell as he is now only in his fourth year. Doubleack has started on only nine occasions this season, and has won £B2O in stakes, his most important success being the Wyndham Cup.

Don’t Forget The Mysotis two-year-old Don’t Forget has been improving since the spring, when he finished fourth in the John Grigg Stakes. He was second to Doria in the Welcome Stakes, second to Absolve in the Nursery Handicap, and third to Enrich and Atreus in the Pioneer Handicap. Don’t Forget ran a good gallop last week with Speedwell, who is also engaged in the Fitzherbert Handicap.

Riding at Trentiham Riding engagements announced for the first day of the Wellington fiacing Club’s summer meeting on January 18, 20, and 22, are as follows: A. Jenkins, Siegmund; G. Tattersall, Old Bill; W. Broughton, Beaupartir, Lambourn, Mayfair, Flammarion; H. Wiggins, Laughing Lass, Courting; B. H. Morris, Disdain, Beau Vite; A. E. The top-weight in the Fitzherbert Handicap has not yet succeeded in winning a race, but has been twice second, twice third, and once fourth

in nine starts. In his second start Grandora was heaten by a head by Queen City in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, run in Imin Isec. Kentucky was two lengths away third. He was unplaced with 9.0' in the Musket Stakes, and in November finished fourth with 8.13 to Phaleron 7.9, Queen City 8.10, and Kentucky 8.10 inthe Juvenile Handicap at Avondale. Grandora 8.12 was third to Nightbeam 8.5 and Money Spinner 7.1 in the Hopeful Stakes Handicap. In his last start Grandora 6.13 was about a length away third to Lou Rosa 7.13 and Stylist 8.1 in the Royal Stakes, run in Imin 14sec. Queen City 7.6 and Kentucky 6.13 were amongst the unplaced lot.

Totalisator Investment# Statistics now available show that £7,981,442 was invested on totalisators throughout New Zealand during the 1939 racing year (till July 31), compared with £7,201,820 in the previous year. Dividends were £6,589,629, as against £5,945,365. Taxes levied by the Government on totalisator investments, dividends and stakes totalled £673,855 in 1939, as against £603,340 in the previous period. Jedburgh Jedburgh is unlikely to race again, as it has been decided not to persevere with her further. She has been returned to her owner, and it is intended to breed from her, but she probably will not be mated until next season. The best was never seen of Jedburgh in her racing, as she was continually troubled with soreness, and difficulty was always experienced in producing her at her best.- She has the breeding to make a name for herself as a producer, as she was got by Balboa from the imported mare Sabor, the dam of Crubenmore, Enwood arid Corban.

KUMARA RACING CLUB. [To The Editor]. Sir,—lt was pleasing to read the letter by “Good Old Kumara” yesterday morning, and if he is not a member I would suggest that he join up immediately as it is enthusiasts of his type who are wanted. Encouraging words such as his will no doubt' he well received by members of ‘the club, and it will undoubtedly assist a great deal in restoring that, zeal and earnestness of endeavour that stamped the old band in the early 9.o’s with the hallmark of quality. The subscription to .the Kumara Racing Club is only £1 a year for which liberal recompense is made in the way of admission tickets. New members, and new blood is requ red to carry on with this well-nigh eighty-year old sporting body, which will live on despite the many difficulties that it has encountered through bad times, laxity, etc. The more the merrier should be its motto, with certain reservations of course. Now “Go.od Old Kumara,” bow about proposing you Tor membership if 1 you are not already enrolled? Thanking you for your en-
