TRENTHAM TRACK WORK.

WELLINGTON, January 15. There was no fast galloping at Trentham this morning, only routine work being done. The weather was showery, and after heavy rain over the week-end the grass tracks were soft. The trial grass was open for strong work, as was the outside of the two-year-old track for .pacing. No more rain is required before- the meeting if the going is to be good on the day. If it clears up, which it later showed signs of doing, the track wilr be in first-class order. Several visitors put in an appearance over the week-end, among them being the Auckland contingent, which included A. Cook from Te Awamutu, with Suleiman. Suleiman, who looks in great order, will appear on the later days. —M. McCarten was out riding work, and among those he rode were his cup mount, Malagigi, and the two-year-old, Sir Beau. McCarten will probably ride Baran in the Aniver- ‘ sary. Handicap. J. H. Jefferd nas brought 6 ..horses to the meeting the other five, besides Baran, being Rakahanga, Serenata, Harina, Areas, and the two-year-old, Chablis. L. G. Morris has arrived with Laughing Lass, Disdain, Wings of Song, and Malik Kafur, all of whom were given pace work. Disdain blew after her work. D- Redstone will riae Wings of Song in the Apprentice’ Handicap. An interesting member of G. W. New’s team of four is the Phaleron Bay' colt Cetewayo, the other three being Flammarion, Myarion, and Chary. Cetewayo, who has had only the one race, which he won impressively here in October, has had a cold, and has only just recovered. Ha will race on the later days and will be ridden by G. Tattersail. Myarion will have C. B. Goulsbro’ in the Apprentices’ Handicap. B. H. Morris rides Chary. F. Smith worked Gladynev Arvakur, and Full Hand, all of whom look fit and well. Gladynev is a lightframed and fleshed three-year with a record of never being further back than third in all his six races this season.

P. E. Pope has brought Bronwea. Buccaneer, and Kentucky, W. H. Dvyyer has Sir Beau and Pekoe. H. N. Wiggins will ride Sir Beau in the Stakes, which will mean a few pounds over-weight. Pekoe will be ridden by W. F. Ellis, who will have the mounts in their races. Mona’s Song is a solidlooking mare, and is a certain starter in the Cup. The 193 G Cup winner, Queen of Song, is again at Trentham, and was among the workers. She bears her ape well. She is the only horse that P? T. Hogan has at the meeting. F. Roberts has Not Out and the, two-year-old, Speedwell, a bay colt bv Myosotis from Love In The Mist, bv Martian from the imported mare, Love a Duck. Not Out will be ridden bv the stable apprentice, M- F. Bi'lington, iri the Apprentices’ HandiAdditional High-weight Handicap riders to those already announced are T. Tito, Chere Amie; N. Cavaney War Lap; and P. Jarvis, Thrasos. Several of the horses engaged in this event are still without riders, and they include Silver River and Harina The Telegraph Handicap candidate, Duncannon, had to have a leg treated after racing at Marton. He has recovered and there is now nothing wrong with him, hut he is a possible non-starter on the opening day at Wellington. . The latest reports from Awapur.i are that Du Marurier is amiss, having filled a leg, and his trainer, L. Knapp, is not optimistic about his chances of seeing the post in the Wellington. Cup. This is bad luck, as on form Du Maurier promised to be one of the interesting light-weights in the race.
