PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS

TO BE LIGHTED. CHRISTCHURCH, January 16. Work will be started shortly on the lighting and marking of pedestrian crossings in the city to comply with the traffic regulation now in lorce demanding that the crossings be visible 100 feet distant at night. The work on the crossings, of which there are more tha n 40, will probably cost several thousands. A preliminary experiment to determine the effect of fiood-iighting and stud reflectors was made last evening by the chairman of the City Council Traffic Committee (Mr. H. E. Denton) and the Chief Traffic Inspector (Mr. J. Bruorton), who were assisted by Mr. J. C. Forsyth, Municipal Electricity Department electrical engineer. The experiment was made at the corner of Armagh and Manchester Streets, where two floodlights were erected to show the markings of the pedestrian crossing, and a triangular stud reflector was placed on one ot the street poles. One or two other crossings were also visited to seeMiow their markings showed in the light ox a car.

It is possible that poles will be marked with black and white bands to denote the crossings by day, and will have reflectors to indicate approach to the crossings at night. No details will be decided, however, until the most logical and economical method can be found.
