N.Z. PILOTS AWARD
Distinguished Flying Cross [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, January 16. Advice was received to-day of the award, for gallant conduct, of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Pilot Officer G. W. F. Carey,' of Christchurch, who is now in the Royal Air Force in England, and who has been engaged in patrol work over the North Sea. His father, 'Mr W. R. Carey, Manager of Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, Ltd., received the following cablegram: “Stock-ton-on-Tees, ' January 12. The Station Commander ■ and . Officer Commanding' the Squadron offer most sincere congratulations on the award today to your son of the Distinguished Flying Cross for gallant conduct in the Pauli Squadron 220.” Pilot Officer Carey began his training at Wigram Aerodrome two years ago, and has been with the Royal Air Force for 12 months. At first he was stationed at Thornley, being engaged principally in navigation. Then he was Navagation Officer at Thornaby, and the la’st advice received by his family was that he was transferred to the North Sea Patrol as « pilot. .
