YESTERDAY’S RACES For the Cups [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, January 16. Auckland won the second Sanders Cup race sailed this morning by a minute from Canterbury, with Southland third, Wellington fourth, and Otago fifth. The points gained in the two races are: Canterbury 46, Auckland 46, Southland 14, Otago 4, Wellington 4. This morning’s race was sailed over a triangular course, three times round, in a moderate south-easterly breeze. Canterbury and Southland carried three men, and the others four. They were the last to cross the starting line, but by the end of the first leg were leading Wellington, Southland, Canterbury, - and Otago. The last-named set the spinnaker at the start, had trouble with it, and lost time which was never made up. WEST COAST DOES WELL.

WELLINGTON, January 16. The Bay of Plenty and Marlborough boats were disqualified in the second race for the Idle Along championship this morning. The Bay of Plenty boat fouled the mark, and the Marlborough boat fouled the Nelson boat. There was a delay of nearly 2 hours in the starting of the race, the Bay of Plenty boat, the Rose Marie, being considered not to conform to the measurements. The Bay of Plenty crew consequently used the Vampire, an Evans Bay boat, for both races. At the start of the race the Wellington boat lost time through mistaking the recall flag for their own. Again, at the finish, when she seemed to be a certain winner, her skipper, E. Beck, lost his grip on the tiller, and he had to go about twice before crossing the line. The finishing times and placings were:—

Canterbury 12hrs. 50mins.—1 Wellington 12hrs. 50mins. 2sec.—-2. Wanganui 12hrs. 52mins. ssec.—3. Nelson 12hrs. 52mins. 40sec.—4. West Coast 12hrs. 53mins. 48sec —5. South Auckland 12hrs. 55niins. 35sec —6.

Otago 12hrs. 56mins. —7. South Canterbury 12hrs 56mins. 32 sec.—B. , Hawke’s Bay 12hrs. 57mins —9.

Bay of Plenty finished third.- and Marlborough sixth. Bay of Plenty, who have performed consistently well, again went to the fore early in the race this afternoon, and retained that position to the finish. Nelson performed surprisingly well to come home third. The West Coast and Hawke’s Bay boats, who are new competitors in the contest, did very well to finish sixth and seventh respectively. The West Coast crew had not sailed an Idle Along boat before the start of this contest.. The finishing times and placings were:.— Bay of Plentv shrs 29mins. —1. Wellington s,hrs 30mins 22sec. —2. Nelson shrs. 35mins.—3. Canterbury shrs. 37mins. —4. South Canterbury shrs 39mins 28sec —5. West Coast shrs 40mins 30sec —6. Hawke’s Bay shrs 40mins 33sec.—7. Marlborough shrs 40mins 55sec. —8. Wanganui shrs 41mins 35sec. —9. South Auckland shrs. 42mins.—10. Otago shrs 45min 30sec —11. POSITIONS IN THE CONTESTS. AFTER YESTERDAY’S RACING. WELLINGTON, January 10. The Caress (Auckland), with two

wins to its credit at the end of the second day’s racing for the Sanders Cup yachting trophy to-day, is in a likely position to win the trophy. She has 77 points. Canterbury has 53 points, Wellington 18, Southland 17, and Otago 5. In the Cornwell Cup contest, Wanganui has two wins and Wellington one.

Wellington is leading on points m the Tauranga Class contest, with Nelson second, Tauranga third, and Greymouth fourth.

The Idlealong Class positions will be telegraphed later, after the meeting to-night. There was light southerly weatner to-day. This suited the Auckland boat in the Sander’s Cup, and the Wanganui boat in the Cornwell Cup races, each winning the two races held in their classes. The Auckland “Rona” boat, “Caress” is beautifully finished, and well suited to light weather, and the crew seem to be at their best when there is not too much wind. The Canterbury and Wellington boats are more at home in a strong breeze. The Southland boat surprised the yachtsmen by putting up excellent performances in the two races to-day, and, with more competition in her home port, she would probably be up with the leaders all the time.

H. Wagstaff, of Wellington, who came home an easy winner ( in the first Cornwell Cup race on Monday, slipped badly to-day,, finishing ninth in the morning, and eighth in the afternoon. s
