The Wingatui is expected from Wellington on Thursday to load coal mr return to Wellington. Personal: Mr. K. Kelly has left on a holiday visit to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. C. Sara and sons left o n Saturday to spend holidays at Auckland. Mrs. P. Wale and son left on Saturday on return to Hokitika. Miss J. Connelly is spending a fortnight’s holiday at Hokitika. Mr. W. Kaye, who has been on relieving duty in the railway office, has returned to Christchurch. Mr. R. McDonagh Jias returned from a visit to his mother at Wellington and also to the Exhibition. Miss Zena Grenfell, who has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Struthers, has returned to Christchurch.

Messrs J. Milne and J. Purvis have returned from a motoring.- tour of South Westland. Duncan McFarlane, Henley Street, Westport, enlisted for the. Second Echelon at Westport on Saturday. Card Tournament: There was a large attendance at the Labour Party’s card tournament last evening. Prizes . were won as follows: —Euchre: Mrs. Forman 1, Mr. McLaughlin 2, Mr. Steele 3; 45's: Mrs. Hainsworth. A dainty supper was served by the Ladies’ Committee. Ministerial Visits: The Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, is due to arrive in Westport about Friday on a visit of inspection of the railway construction and other public works. On the 23ra the Hon. W. Nash, Minister of Finance, the Hon. F. Langstone, Minister of Lands, and the Hon P. C. Webb, M.P. for Buller and-. Minister of Mines, are due to visit Westport mainly in connection with pakihi development and land clearing schemes. Fire at Stockton: The well-known grocery and hardware store, owned by Mr. R. F. Thompson, at Stockton, 'was completely destroyed by fire early on Saturday morning. When the fire was noticed at 2 a.m. by a resident, who was awakened by a’ noise, the building was well ablaze, with no hope of saving anything. Mr. Thompson resides at Ngakawau. The estimated loss is £1306. The building was insured for £250, and the contents for £5OO with the Commercial Insurance Company. Special Survey Corps: , ',

It is understood there was a good response to the appeal for recruits for the special survey corps at the Buller Gorge yesterday. It is also, stated that several employees of the local railway volunteered their services.
