Mr Casey’s Career WELLINGTON, January 4. Mr Casey, has been first assistant general manager of the New Zealand Railways, since May, . 1933, when he took over the. position made vacant by the appointment of Mr Mackley as general manager. He joined the engineering staff of the department as a cadet in 1902, and served in the Wanganui, Auckland, Greymouth and Ohakune districts. In 1912 he took over the duties of assistant engineer. in the Auckland district, and in 1916 took charge of the grade eastment works between Penrose and Mercer. In 1921 he- was transferred to the Christchurch district, and was engaged in remodelling the station yards preparatory to the opening of the Otira tunnel. When it was decided to proceed with the new, station yard at Auckland and the new Auckland-Westfield railway, Mr Casey was specially selected to take charge of this work, His appointment as inspecting engineer, with headquarters at Wellington, was made in March, 1925, and subsequently he was promoted. to divisional superintendent in,charge of the traffic locomotive, and maintenance branches of the North Island, with headquarters at Auckland. In . May, 1931, he became assistant chief engineer of New Zealand Railways at Wellington and in September of. the same year he took over' the duties of chief; engineer, holding this position until his appointment as assistant general manager.

The last-riientioned appointment was a popular one, thb “New Zealand Railways Magazine” remarking at the time that Mr Casey was held in high esteem by the commercial community and that his promtion had been received well both in business arid railway circles.
