WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

GREY BRANCH MEETING. The September meeting of the Greymouth Women’s Institute, held in Trinity Hall on Wednesday afternoon, was well attended. The , President, Mrs E. Parfitt, occupied the chair, and the meeting opened with the Institute i song. Mrs Biack read the aspirations. I Six new members were received. Mrs Beale, one of the foundation members of the Institute, was welcomed back after a long absence. Miss Murphy and Mrs N. Thompscn were elected delegates to attend <-e semi-Annual Council Meeting of the West Coast Federation of Women’s Institutes, to be held in October. A remit regarding offensive literature on public book-stalls was sent forward for discussion. Mrs Logan and Mrs N. Thompson, speaking on behalf of the Red Cross Society, asked for help in the good work the Society was undertaking at this time of national emergency, and received a ready and willing response. It was decided that the Institute sent for a parcel of goods from the Canterbury Disabled Soldiers. Reestablishment Association, and also that a donation, in money and goods, be sent to the leper station at Makogai Island. 1 Mrs Pound handed in a new air which she had composed for the W.I. song, and which it was decided to try j out at the October meeting. The Institute feels proud of a composer amongst its members, and Mrs Pound was applauded for her efforts. An impromptu debate, “That Women Should Propose,” with Mrs N. Thompson, Mrs Longstaff and Miss Murphy (leader) taking the affirmative side, and Mrs Pound, Mrs McNeil and Mrs Black (leader), the negative, was kindly judged by Mr Bush, his 1 award going to the affirmative team with 135 points against the negative, . with 128. The impromptu debate was an entirely new departure in the In- | stitute, was thoroughly enjoyed. In the competitions for the afternoon. Mrs A. Thompson received first award, for a vase of flowers, and Mrs Travers for a plate of pikelets.
