FRENCH ACTION Arrest of Italians [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] TUNIS, December 8. Hundreds of demonstrating Italians were arrested including Übaldo Rey, leader of the local Fascist organisation. Later, a squadron of French bombers circled over the city. (Received December 9, 10.16 p.m.) TUNIS, December 9. Several thousand Arabs attempted to make an anti-Italian demonstration in Tunis amid crowds of Italians and French. The Italians and French were equally prepared for a fight. The police, however, cleared avenues in the crowd, after several charges, in which people were knocked down, cafe tables were overturned, and scores of arrests were made. Those arrested included ten Italians, one being a member of the Consulate. A dozen ringleaders among those arrested are being held for trial. It i s reported that the arrested Italians will be charged with seditious activities. It is reported that the French are sending reinforcements from Algeria to Tunis. Five thousand students from the Latin quarter burlesqued the Italian claims., marching and shouting “Give us Vesuvius and Venice.” Anti-Italian demonstrations occurred at Toulouse and Strasbourg, students marching in me streets, demanding that Italy should hand over Sicily, Sardinia, and Tripoli. The police were called out, to protect the Consulate. Corsican residents at Monte Carlo demonstrated against the claims, the police preventing scenes outside the Italian Consulate. ITALIAN PROTEST. TUNIS, December 8. The Italian Consul-General, protesting to France against the anti-Italian demonstrations, declared that if they did not cease, the Italians would adopt legitimate defence measures.
