DENNISTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Personal: Messrs T. Muir, D. Edmonds and W. Meek are attending the conference being held at Westport. Mr T. O. Bishop, Secretary of the coal owners organisation is also in attendance. Messrs V. Stephens, P. Kerr and J. Madden received injuries whilst employed in the mine, that necessitated medical attention. Mr J. C. Brown of Westport has been a visitor to Denniston and was in attendance at a deputation of the Union Executive to the management regarding local disputes. Mr A. R. Burt is at present in Auckland to bid farewell to Mrs Burt who is leaving for an extended holiday in Scotland. Mr W. Smythe has practically recovered from the injuries he received whilst employed in the- Iron Bridge mine. Mr E. Corden is spending his holidays with friends at Greymouth. Mr Coburn of Denniston has returned from a visit to Sydney, Australia. Fire Brigade: There was a splendid attendance at the euchre held at the station social room. Many close games were contested. The winners, ladies, Mrs C. Jack; gents, Mr S. Nesbit. The brigade are holding a bazaar on Friday and Saturday in the Orange Hall, and have a splendid variety of novelties and presents. Many stalls being, loaded for ready sale. There will be a large attendance. Denniston Club: , • The attendance was slightly reduced, apparently due to the. unreasonable weather for the social and euchre. The winners were as follows • —Ladies, Mesdames Chapman and Cummings tie. Gents’ P. Smythe. Accident: Master Maxie Higgings, aged seven years, son of Mr and Mrs G. Higgings of Denniston, whilst, at play near hi s home, fell and received a fractured arm. Funferal: <•* A large number of friends and members of the Druids Lodge attended the funeral of Mr Jim Cox, who died in the Buller Hospital after a Jengthy illness. Our late comrade for many years was stage coach driver on many of the old coach routes in the North Island and was later he f I | groom to the Westport Coal Company. The deepest sympathy of the com-munity-is extended to Mrs Cox in her bereavement. Industrial: The Denniston mines continue to work steadily. Messrs W. Fleming and T. Lawson recently were examined for Deputies’ certificates. Temporarily the coal cutting machine Is laying idle as the majority of niaces in the mine are undergoing pillar extraction. Several new hands have been recently engaged. Unfortunately the climatic conditions were at their worst; heavy rain falling incessantly, during the visit of the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines, and he was very dissappointed at not being able to inspect the tennis court, swimming pool, Cascade Road, and many other undertakings jtnd improvements/ that have been done recently on the Hill. The hard worked Minister of Mines met several deputations on various items of local interest.

Bbwling Club: The weather on the Hill so far this season has been no good for bowling though the greens are in wonderful order, and only good weather is required for a start to be made with the championship games. Several rinks visited the Clubs on the flat, last— week-end, but again wet weathere dogged their steps.

Marshallvale Women's Institute: Mrs Gospodnetich presided over the monthly meeting held in the Miners’ Hall. The motto was given by Mrs Gourdie. “Covet nothing Overmuch”. The roll call, “A Tall Storv” was the cause of much amusement. Supper was served by the hostesses dancing and games with vocal and musical items filled the evening. Competition Christmas novelty to cost no more than 2s. Many pretty and useful articles were displayed. The result was Mrs Gourdie Ist, Mrs Pearson 2nd. Mrs Jones 3rd. The president wished all members the compliments of the coming festive season “Auld Lang Syne” concluding the gathering.
