The Wingatui is expected to sail from Wellington on Tuesday and is due on Wednesday to load coal for return to that port. The Karepo has been delayed and now sails from Gisborne on Monday, and is expected to arrive on Thursday to load coal for Auckland and Portland. The Poolta is expected to sail from Greymouth on Monday evening, and completes the coal loading here for Napier and Gisborne on Tuesday. The Te Arqha is expected to sail from Wellington to-day, with general cargo for Westport and Little Wanganui.

The Kaitoa sailed with coal for Nelson last evening, and is expected to return to-morrow to again load for Nelson. Personal: Mr and Mrs John Coleman, Melbourne, are visiting Westport. Mr C, B. Rawlings, Inspector of Awards, Greymouth, is paying a visit to Westport. Mrs Hatfield, of New Plymouth, is visiting Westport as the guest of Mr and Mrs W. Spence. Mr E. G. Gaghan and Mr N. Vercoe paid a visit to the' Hotel Buller yesterday, and left this morning for the Hotel Westland, Hokitika. Mr F. N. Shallcrass, Greymouth, has arrived in Westport to take over the management of Spiers Radio and Electric Service. Mrs T. B. Pickering, accompanied by her two daughters, returned to Westport last evening from Raratonga, and will reside with her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Cressey. Senior Sergeant Durnie, Finger Print Expert, and Senior Sergeant Kelly, Arms Expert, of the headquarters staff, visited Westport yesterday, during the course of a lecturing tour of the Dominion.

Mining Accidents: On Wednesday morning last, Mr A. (Pugg) Kerr, Coalbrookdale, met with a serious accident to one of his hands, | whilst “clipping on” at Coalbrookdale' sheds. The unfortunate man was taken to the Westport Hospital,) where it is feared that amputation of. one of the fingers will be necessary, j On the same day, James Madden, junr., was carried from the mine, | from the mine suffering from an in-' jury to one of his legs. It seems that the boy’s foot slipped in between! the decking <t Hawkin’s Junction. The prompt stopping of the rope pre-1 vented what might otherwise would have been a more serious accident. | Madden was taken to the Denniston Hospital. A further accident occurred on the same day, Mr Vic. Anderson receiving injuries to his back. A Thunderbolt: During the thunderstorm experienced throughout the district on Wednesday night, a thunderbolt did con-| siderable damage to the property of, Mr R. B. Golding at Miko. During] the height of the storm a thunderbolt struck the wireless aerial, and' fire a few feet from the window of the residence. Upon investigation this morning, it was learned that the' aerial was cut off at each end near the insulators, and the telephone was also out of order. A large hole had been made in a shed roof and numerous farm implements w&e scattered around, having been thrown over by the concussion of the explosion. The telegraph wires on the main road were destroyed for a chain. Although the disturbance was very severe in this locality, no further damage was i eported.

Technical High School: The break-up ceremony of the Westport Technical High School is to be held on Thursday next at 2.30 p.m. The regular meeting of the Board of Managers will be held at the school after the break-up ceremony. Owing to the school tennis courts not being completed and the wet weather experienced of late, delay has been caused in the playing of the inter-House tennis competition for the Wood Cup. The preliminary games, however, have now been played off on St. John’s courts. Marsden beat Grey by 9 sets to 1. Seddon <hd Wilding had 6 sets each, but Seddon won on games by 58/51. The final between Marsden and Seddon will be played at the first opportunity.

Inter-Secondary School Sports: Arrangements are being made for an inter-school sports meeting at Reefton next' February, between the secondary departments of ,the Westport Technical High, Granity, Denniston and Reefton District High Schools, This event was inaugurated at Westport last February, and proved a great success. Amateur Athletic Club: The second evening meeting of the Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held on Thursday evening in the presence of a good! attendance -of spectators. The weather was fine, but the track was on the soft side from rain earlier in the day. In the senior events, K. Brown and D. Bromley shared the honours. The junior events were accounted for by J. Taylor and R. Hawes off generous marks, with the scratch man, E. Svendson second on both occasions. Miss Marshall signalised her re-ap-pearance by a double win off the back mark.
