INDUSTRIES . CAMPAIGN Hon. D. G. Sullivan’s Inaugural Appeal [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, December 3. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Hon. D. G. Sullivan) today announced the inauguration of an intensive campaign to stimulate the expansion of the Dominion manufacturing industries. It will be launched on Monday evening by the Gov-ernor-General (Lord Galway), who will broadcast an address over the national stations.

Special stress is laid on a Christmas I gifts campaign which has the Object of instilling ■ the psychology of New Zealand-mindedness. “Some £24,000,000 of extra spending power has been placed in the hands of the people, and of this only one-third has gone into our own factories. Our national wealth is represented in our national production, and to sustain and improve our standard of living it is 1 essential that there should be more l production,” added Mr Sullivan. ' Hon. D. u. Sullivan, speaking on the 1 expansion of industries campaign, said:— I “Every man and woman now in employment can do his or her share to build up the Dominion by giving a preference to New Zealand goods ' when making purchases. They will

i thus be keeping their own kin in a job, while also ensuring that the job which they themselves have will return to them that economic social security all desire. As we each purchase goods produced by our own people, so will the demand grow. I cannot stress that too strenuously. ‘This is more than an appeal to patriotism —it is the application of sound common sense to the problem that faces j every man and won^.n—the retaining of their job and the maintaining of ' tneir standard of living.

j “Our industries and natural resources must be developed to a greater extent than ever before; and, to this end, all the aids of Scientific industrial research, all waste that can be eliminated from production, all factors that will ensure maximum production with minimum fatigue, and the maintenance of high standards of quality, will be brought to bear on industry.’ It is with a full sense of the benefits that will accrue to New Zea-, land, in particular, and the Empire in general, that we launch this campaign for the development of all of our resources. “Realising the importance of the issues, we are endeavouring to instil in the minds of our people a consciousness of the fact that every individual can help to achieve that full development which all must desire.

“Lord Galway’s broadcast talk will be followed by other talks each Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday night., when the. Prime Minister, members of the Cabinet, representatives of our manufacturing and industrial organisations will make their contribution to this campaign for national welfare.” “As the season of good will approaches, we appeal to the people to give practical effect to their good will by purchasing gifts made by their fellow New Zealanders,” - concluded the Minister. “It is to our owh New Zealand people that we must look for the development of our resources, and only insofar as they give preference to New Zealand goods, and only insofar as each unit in the scheme of production is efficiently producing the maximum amount of goods services, can we build our country up to that state of internal stability and economic soundness that should be the goal of all New Zealanders. It is a goal worth some effort, and I am sure we will have the loyal co-operation of all sections of the , community, as the development of our country is something that rises above and beyond party politics or differences that might, in other ways, divide us. I am confident we will achieve our objective.”
