HOKITIKA, May 18.

The funeral of the late Mrs Mary Ellen Walsh, of Wataroa, took place at the Hokitika Cemetery yesterday, being largely attended. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church by Rev. Father J.. Quinn (Wataroa), who also oiliciated at the graveside. Mr S. A. C. Darby, Conservator of State Forests, Hokitika, left yesterday on transfer to Palmerston North. Ho will be replaced by Mr Foster, of Nelson. Visitors to Hotel Westland include Mr and Mrs L. Wright (Oamaru), Mrs J. White (Dunedin), Mr C. Kyle (Christchurch), Capt. A. Perano, Miss D. Clench (Picton), Mr and Mrs C. White, Miss White, Mr W. White .(Sydney), Mr O. Reid (Wellington), Mr H. Duke, Mr 11. Vanes (Dunedin), Mr L.> Hickie, Mr F. Phillips, Mr J. Godwin (Sydney). St. Mary's Debating and Literary Club held their annual meeting qd Tuesday evening, there being a good attendance. A satisfactory position was disclosed in the report and balance sheet which was read and adopted. The election of officers for the coming year resulted as follows:— President, Mr J. Lynch; vice-presi-dent, Mr J. Stuart; secretary, Mr M Moore; treasurer, Mr C. J. Schroder; librarian, M,r C. Haussmann; social committee, Messrs T. O’Connor and J. Davidson; executive, Rev. Father O’Gorman and Mr C. Haussmann. The meeting was brought to a close with supper and games.

The funeral of the late Mr James Rooney, of Arthurstowji, took place yesterday afternoon, and was attended by many friends. Rev. Father O’Gorman celebrated Requiem Mass at St. Mary’s Church, and conducted the service at the graveside.

The Ross Golf Club held their opening match on Saturday. In the absence of the president (Mr G. H. Chapman), the vice-president, Mr W. D. Thom, in a short address, congratulated the club on the condition of the links, and expressed the wish that the new clubhouse would be available for use at an early date. The Mayoress-elect, Mrs K. 6. May, with a stroke which would have done credit to many seasoned players, drove the first ball and declared the links open. The ball was retrieved by Master Ross Jones. The match, a Canadian foursome, played over 14 holes, resulted in a tie betwean Mrs Hansbury and R. Jones and Mr and Mrs Frew, both pairs having a net score of 47. On a count back, Mrs Hansbury and R. Jones were declared the winners. Best scores returned were: Mrs Hansbury and R. Jones 85—38— 47, Mr and Mrs Frew 86—39—47, Miss V. Jones and B. Mitchell 85—34—51, Mrs Flaherty and J. Jones 77—25— 52, Mr and Mrs Buchanan 90—37— 53, Mrs Houlahan and W. D„ Thom 79—25—54.
