Remits to be considered by the next conference of the New Zealand Federation of the Justices of the Peace Association include one dealing with the question of suspects by police officers. It is contended that the wearing down of persons by continuous questioning until a confession is obtained is undesirable. It is proposed, therefore, that a J.P. should be present on occasions when a suspect is being questioned. As a further reason for the presence of a J.P. a case is cited in’ which the statement by the prisoner differed from that of the police. The prisoner claimed that he had been questioned for three hours. The police denied this, saying that it had only been for a few minutes. It is main tained that had a J.P. been present at the questioning there could have been no doubt on the point.

The festival of St. Valentine’s Day, which, after a long period of obscurity in British countries at least, appears recently to have taken on a fresh lease of life, was celebrated yes'terday. St. Valentine’s Day, which is stated to be named after a saint of the first century, who represent ed friendship, affection, and love, was recently revived in Australia, but yesterday marks its reintroduction into New Zealand. The time-honour' ed cards with sentimental poetry and affectionate insignia upon them have all gone the way of the bustle and the crinoline, but modern celebrants of St. Valentine’s Day will find provided for them a wide variety of tasteful and effective articles suitable to the occasion.
