Trotting Notes

A A. W Holmes went on from Welling Lon to Auckland with Ace Pot and the two-year-old Taiki, by Grattan Loya) -Becky Logan, and therefore ahal brother to Graham Direct. He is en gaged in the North Island Challenge Stakes to be decided on the second day of Auckland Trotting Club-s meet ing. The early favourite for this race is Contender, owned and trained y J. T. Paul.

F. J. Smith disposed of Myrtle Oro after the Wellington meeting but in her place he took back with him L. F. Berkett’s two horses, Charlie Chan and Wrackless. Both are useful, and will find in Auckland classes to suit them.

A Reduced Field: For the Waiheke Handicap, to be decided at Auckland to-day, Myrt.e Oro and Cloverdale have been scratched, and this will obviate the necessity of running the race in divisions. Chili Bean Penalised: Chili Bean, as the result of his success at Hutt Park, has been penalised in the Railway Handicap today, and is now on 60yds. Mvrtle Oro Sold: Having been sold to a Wairarapa owner, Myrtle Oro did not return from Wellington with F. J. Smith’s horses | and has been withdrawn from the Auckland Trotting Club’s February meeting. Myrtle Oro raced consist-] ently at Hutt Park, for three seconds and a third in four starts, and should be useful in novice and improvers events at the Wairarapa and Manawatu meetings. Draw for Post Positions: The draw for post positions of the ; horses on the limit in the Waiheke Handicap at Epsom to-day, is as follows: —1 Cloverdale, 2 Kete Kura, 3 Gipsy Light, 4 Blue Crest. 5 Sunny Parrish, 6 Lady Potts, 7 Vanora, 8 Winhisway, 9 Transwell, 10 Great Gem, 11 Worthy Quest, 12 Wall Street. 13 Tommy McElwyn, 14 John’s Last, 15 Reyola, 16 Sewana, 17 Top Hand, 18 Harlow, 19 Silver Bullet, 20 Forest Jewel, 21 Elsie Hamlyn, 22 Jewel Crest, 23 Concliff Maid, 24 Isabella Pointer, 25 Captain Scott, 26 Ratepayer. The other acceptors are Tanga- ’ roa 36 yards, and Roma Girl 48 yards.

Racing Notes

Arikira at Ellerslie: The ten-year-old gelding Arikira, by Limond from Hinearoha. has joined R S. Bagby’s stable at Ellerslie and is to be trained for jumping events ahead. Arikira, who has not raced for a considerable time, was a good performer on the flat until he developed waywardness at the barrier. He is very fresh after a long spell, but is in healthy condition and' should make good progress with a little work.

Martara in India: . Private advice has been received m

Auckland to the effect that the New Zealand-bred gelding, Martara, was recently successful at Bombay. After winning the Wellesley Stakes at Calcutta on December 4, Martara met with a couple of mishaps that prevented him from keeping some engagements, but he has evidently recovered form.

Australian Racing: Principal runners in the Oakleigr Plate at the V.A.T.C. Autumn meeting at Caulfield to-day, are:—Gold Rod 9.12, Pamelus 9.11, Actor 9.8, King's Head 9.6, Studio 9.5, Ajax 9.3. Aurie’s Star 9.3, Amiable 8.11. Namakia 7.3.

A Further Opportunity: Prival has run some very good races in hack handicap company, but when asked to carry weight in the maiden class his efforts have not been so good. This suggests that he goes best under light weights and it remains to be seen If such will be the case in the Waimangu Stakes, in which his weight is 9.1. At his last start he was narrowly beaten by two smart hacks, Prince Rangi and Melvanui, so that on form he should stand out in the Waimangu Stakes, which is for maidens.

Kilonsa: Kilonsa’s success on the second' da\ at Takapuna was so decisive as to force one to concede her a chance in any event she contests in future. Her next outing will be in the Rotorua Cup, and even with a rise in weight from 7.1 to 8.5 she cannot be disregarded. It has taken her a long time to confirm the high opinion entertain - ed of her, and which led tn her being taken to Victoria as a three-year-old. The mission on that occasion was unsuccessful, but she is now in line to give another good account oi herself.

Miss Te Koura! Miss Te Koura, who failed so badly at Rotorua last November and then won well at Ellerslie shortly afterwards, is engaged in the hack sprints at Rotorua, and her speed should enable her to go close to winning thereby making amends for her recent defeats at Thames and Takapuna.

Gay Sister: , , . Gay Sister is in two hack events at Rotorua on Saturday, the short and middle-distance events, and. if ed for the latter, her recent showings indicate that she will be hard to bea-. Lack of early speed may bring about her defeat at Rotorua, but if not hopelessly placed she should win one or two events, for she is a good stayer and there may not be many runners in the Geyser Hack Handicap.

Maori Song: . . That good sprinter Maori Song . due to make his reappearance at Roto rua. It is a long time since he ran, and it is probable that he may not be at his best again until the tracks be come softer, although at present a 1 liberal fall of rain has made the turf in ideal order. He should have a good record at the early winter fixtures and may be tried over a middle distance later on.

Favoured by Weights: After his third and first on the second day of the Thames Meeting last month, there will be a good deal support for the northern hack, British Banner, in the highweight classes at Rotorua. This gelding does not lack size and the scale of weights should bo in his favour.

Pocket Venus: Pocket Venus displayed a lot 011 speed on the second day at Takapuna, leading right up to the distance. This filly is due to have her next start a. Rotorua, and if she can begin as brilliantly she will be difficult to beat, for the turning track is all in favour of early speed.

Tudor: . Tudor was a bit tender recently and this prevented him from starting at the Takapuna Summer Meeting. However, he has been nominated for the coming big provincial fixtures, so he may soon be in the limelight again.

Balinavar: Since the spring Balinavar has no. been extensively raced and he should saddle up well for his coming engagements on the provincial circuit. A feature of his earlier racing was his fine finishing run, and, on big tracks, he is competent to win in any hack company. Half-Brother to Mobile:

Roseman, a winner at Riccarton and Dunedin, hails from an excellent winning family, as he is no other than a half-brother to Mobile and closely related maternally to Ravenna, dam of Travenna, Ventrac, etc., and to Overdrawn and Alma. His only previous success was at Wyndham last

year. Now four years old, Roseman is a chestnut gelding by Rosenor (site of Ponty, etc.) from the Sunny LakeDroski mare Bonnie Lake, half-sister to Ravenna and Oxerdiaui He was bred by Mr. R. R- McDonald, and is being raced by the Mosgie. haine?, D. J. McDonald, who also raced Mobile and who has recently ha considerable success with Janet Gaynor. On the-way he ran out the seven furlongs on Saturday he should not be troubled to go the extra furlong over which he is engaged at Wingatui to-day.
