HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, February 10. The Hokitika Labour Party at its meeting last evening selected candidates for the forthcoming local body elections as follows:—Hokitika Borough Council: Messrs D. Breeze, J. Fox and E. W. Heenan; Hokitika Harbour Board: Messrs H. Harvey, and E. W. Heenan; Westland Power Board: Messrs E. W. Heenan and F. Selby; Westland Hospital Board: Messrs J. Fox and E. W. Heenan; Greynjouth Harbour Board, Mr. E. W. Heenan (recommended). The nominations for the Borough Council were limited to three in order that every local organisation might have an opportunity to obtain representation, being the view of the branch that in a town such as Hokitika, all sections should have a voice in local government. It was decided to elect at a special meeting an executive for the election work, including the enrolment of all entitle to vote, this for persons over the age of 21 years.

For the proposed aerodrome at Harihari it is hoped to secure 200 acres.

Mr. F. Selby was appointed to represent the Branch at the official opening of the new bridge at Kanieri. A credit balance from the Party’s picnic at Cass Square for children' on New Year’s Day was shown. Advice was received from the under-secretary for Housing that tenders will be called in a few weeks for the first seven State houses to be erected here on sections secured in Whitcombe Square and the School Reserve; also that the Botanical Gardens reserve would be cleared, roaded and marked off in sections ready for the erection of the second batch of houses. The branch resolved to join in welcome to the Hon R. Semple and to assist the Kanieri members of the branch with their request to the Minister for a new drainage tunnel from the township direct to the river, Mr. F. Selby, of the Kanieri Beautifying Society, to be advised that all possible assistance would be lent their deputation. It was decided to point out to the School. Jubilee Comittee that an ex'pupil who had at their banquet interjected with references to the Labourt Party was not attending the function as a Labour Party member, but as an ex-pupil and the branch had no responsibility for his action, and would regret it were any political significance attributed to the incident. The branch regretted that the chairman at the banquet should have made the assertion on the occasion that a representative of the Labour Party had been ejected from the banquet. It was decided to cooperate in the distribution of the pamphlet “What Labour Means to You.” Executive members and delegates were appointed in connection with Labour’s general election campaign. It was decided to endeavour to have Hon R. Semple during his visit this month to meet the members at a social gathering. Members were instructed that in submitting such questions as they might have to ask Mr. J. K. Holyoake M.P. at the local meeting they should follow the course of writing the question and having it passed by the executive to the speaker.
