KARAMEA NOTES

[Our OwnCorresppndcntj. ■ ■ .. Harbour .-being carried out here at/alHJ>peed"p.o? ? sible, and good work The timber contracts are ed and the stone is being tipped’, op the Otomahana side of the river; sector on the south side of the river is temporarily held up, awaiting thecat: rival of a steam shovel. The channel which cut through the sandhills, and which kept open for several months, is now closed, and no definite channel can be depended on until the river is turned. The small amount of water running along the sandhills has formed a channel which cuts across the end of the training wall and runs northwest. I might say the whole of the population of Karamea regret to hear that our popular hotel-keeper, and general all round sport, Mr. W. R. Simpson, who was last week admitted to the Buller Hospital, is not improving as fast as we would like to see. All hope and trust that his enforced confinement in the hospital will be of short duration, and that he will soon return to his home completely cured. The fixed prices for butter still seems to be a burning question of the day. But it has been last year and is today a boon to the farmers here and several here who have been for years scarcely able to keep up their interest, find themselves in a position to pay a little off their principal. This gops to show that the average farmer is well satisfied with the fixed prices. Recently a very small percentage of our farmers have joined in the political move for compensated prices. But some people would not be satisfied with 2/6 per lb. as long as it came from the Labour Government! It ’s rumoured that a conference was held recently somewhere down the Coast in connection with compensated prices and that Karamea sent a representative. It was not with the consent of the suppliers. How and why a representative was sent from here is only known to a few, and from what I can learn, no member of the Labour Party, many of whom are farmers, knew anything of the move. A general meeting of Labour supporters is being held during the coming week to pass a resolution disclaiming all connection with the compensating price movement, and to pass a resolution of confidence in the Labour Government and the fixed prices. * It is understood that Hon. Mr. P. C. Webb is to visit this new portion of his electorate in about a week’s time. I take this opportunity of wishing your readers and your staff, and all old West Coast friends, a merry Christmas and a bright and happy New Y ear.
