Mr. Wilson has been a particularly efficient, as well as an obliging officer, during his stay in Reefton, and he will be greatly missed. Alf Cleaver, a pupil at the Reeftbn District High School, way splashed with acid while at work with another boy in the science room on Monday. The other boy drew the stoppe of a bottle, and this came away unexpectedly, and the acid caught Cleaver in the eye. He was attended by Dr. Wicken and taken home. It is not anticipated that the eye will be permanently injured. Mr. Scott, of the Railway staff, Palmerston North, is on a holiday visit to Reefton and is the guest of hi.s brother, Mr. D. Scqtt, Buller Road. He was at one time connected with the late Mr. R. T. Hungerford’s racing stable when it sheltered such horses as British Lion, Whakawater, The Dreamer and others. He now finds few here whom he knew in those days.

The death took place last evening of a well known resident, Mr. Peter Strachan, at his residence, Coal Street, after an illness extending over some four or five weeks. Previously he had not enjoyed very robust health, suffering from the effects of frostbite received many years ago while employed at the Progress crushing mill as amalgamator, where he remained until the works closed down. The deceased was a native of Maraket, New South Wales, and 61 years of age. He came to the Dominion over 35 years years ago and had resided in Reefton ever since. He was a staunch Unionist and in past years was a prominent worker in Union ranks. For some years past he was coal mining and latterly on public works. He is survived by a widow and family of three children, two daughters and one son, Misses Edna and Doreen, and Mr. Ernest Strachan. The family will receive the sincere sympathy of a very wide circle of friends. The interment will take place to-morrow, the funeral leaving his late residence, Coal Street, at 2 p.m. for St. Stephen’s Church, and thence for the Suburban Cemetery. Mr. G. E. A. Hubbard, who has been on a couple of months’ holiday to Australia, returned on Saturday evening, rie states that he had a most enjoyable time in the Commonwealth.

Owing to the rain on Saturday afternoon, the opening of ine Reefton Tennis Club’s new courts did not take place. The opening has now been fixed for Saturday afternoon next.
