BOWLING

The Greymouth Bowling Club's new green, providing for four extra rinks, was officially opened on Saturday by the president, Mr T. A. W. Tate, in the presence of a large gathering of members. He congratulated the club members on the new facilities for play. The increasing membership of the club made extra ground necessary, and he hoped that the new green would be the scene of many enjoyable games. The new ground would be named the upper green, and the original ground would be known as the lower green. He asked Mr J. Truscott and Mr T. Jones, the two oldest members of the club, to roll up the first kitty and bowl respectively. Aipplause greeted the “veteijans’ ” efforts. Mr Jones recalled that it was 34 years ago since he and seven others started the Greymouth Club, and arranged for the formation of the old green. He regretted that he was the only survivor of the eight. He wished the club and the new green every success. No play has yet taken place on ths upper green, but it appears to be in good condition, and is available for use when required.

The newsly-formed Karoro Club will hold the official opening of the green on Saturday next. Owing to the enthusiasm and energy displayed by some members, particularly Mr J. Kyle (president) and Mr R. Sansom (secretary), the club now possesses- a well-laid green and a pavilion that should meet requirements for some time. Unofficial games have already been enjoyed on the green, and it is agreed that its condition is most satisfactory at this early stage.
