RAND MINE DISASTER

CAUSED BY LIGHTNING. [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received December 13, 7.30 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, December 13. Lightning struck the bell wire at the poppet head of the central shaft at the Rand mine, and the impulse detonated eleven dynamite charges four’ thousand feet below. The explosion killed eight native miners, and injured four more, one of whom saved the European superintendent, Mr J. Pretorius, by pushing him aside after the first explosion.
