WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent.] WESTPORT, November 29. Port of Westport—Tides (New Zea land Summer Time): Tuesday, 30—08.34 a.m.; 08.55 p.m. Wednesday, 1—09.09 a.m.; 09.31 p.m. Thursday 2—09.45 a.m.; 10.06 p.m. Friday 3.—10.17 a.m.; 10.38 p.m. Saturday 4—10.50 a.m.; 11.13 p.m. Shipping: The Totara is due from Wellington to-morrow to load for Miramar. The Wingatui is expected to-mor-row from Wellington to reload for that port. The Kartigi is expected to arrive from Portland next Saturday to load for Auckland. The Poolta is due to arrive here about Monday December 6th to load for Bluff, Dunedin and Timaru. The Te Aroha arrived from Wellington and sails to-morrow morning for Little Wanganui thence Wellington.

The Canopus arrived from Auckland to-night. The Rata sailed at noon to-day for Greymouth to complete loading for Wanganui. The Titoki sailed at. 10 p.m. on Saturday night for Tokomaru Bay and returns to Nelson. Personal:

Mr. A. McLagan, organising secretary of the New Zealand Federation of Labour has been visiting Westport. Mr. Wilkinson of the North Island is visiting the Rev. H. L. Wilkinson of Westport. Mr. D. Kaye of Wellington is visiting his mother, Mrs. Kaye of Romilly Street, Westport. Miss N. Comerford of Inangahua Landing is visiting Westport. Mr. Nightingale, manager of the Python Flax Co., Waimangaroa, who has been a patient in the Westport Hospital, left by special plane for Wellington.

N.Z. Labour Party Carnival: The second birthday of the Labour Government was celebrated on Friday evening at the Friendly Societies’ Hall by the Westport Women’s Branch of the Labour Party. The carnival ball was a huge success, the attendance at the dance and cards exceeded all expectations. The following are the winners of the card prizes:— Euchre, Mrs E. R. Fox 1, Miss A. O’Donohue 2, Mrs. McKendry won the 45’s competition. Other prize winners were Messrs Quinn and Walker. The dance hall was tastefully arranged, the far end taking the form of a lounge. Spirited music was provided by Dinky’s Dance Band. The M.C.’s duties were capably carried out by Messrs H. Swan and T. Fowler. The dance prize winners were:—Special spot light, Miss G. Ward and Mr. A. Mitchell. Mrs C. Brewer and Mr. J. Hall, Miss G. Hansby and Mr. M'oss, Miss Tinetti and Mr. Bert Williams. A competition for the box of chocolates was won by Mrs. H. Betley. Extras were ably played by Mr. Gibson, of Tiroroa. During the evening, the president (Mrs. F. O’Gorman) in a short speech, thanked all those who helped to make the function such a great success. Apologies were read out by the president, from the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage who wished the branch every success, and the Hon P. C. Webb, who regretted his inability to attend. A dainty home made supper was served by the ladies’ committe. Prior to the conclusion all present joined hands and sang to the Labour Government, “For They are Tolly Good Fellows,” with much enthusiasm.

Cricket: The association cricket fixture between Tiroroa and St. Canice's which was played at Westport on Saturday resulted in a 5 point win for St. Canice’s. Tiroroa batting first scored 59 runs. J. Smart 40, was the only batsman to reach double figures, his score included 3 sixes and 4 fours. For St. Canice’s Hai’den 3 wickets for 7 runs, McElwee 4 for 17, and Phipps 3 for 33 secured the wickets. St. Canice’s in reply were all out for 58 runs. T. Phipps 35 was the only player to make a stand. Bowling honours were shared by Anderson 5 for 27 a-nd Eyles 4 for 10. At this stage a four

point win for Tiroroa seemed certain, but the glorious uncertainty of cricket was again denVonstrated when, in the second innings they were all out for 35 runs, which score St. Canice s passed just on time (with 3 wickets down) in a hurricane finish. Eyles 12, was top scorer for Tiroroa. Wickets fell to Wheatley 4 for 16, Mason 2 for 8 Harden 3 for 3, and Phipps 1 for 1. St Canice’s had lost 3 wickets for 41 runs when play concluded. R. Nottle 11 and Marshall 16 not out scoring most of the runs. Eyles 1 for 5 and Anderson 2 for 28, took the wickets. Many intending patrons of the weekly Labour Card party were unable to gain admittance t r o the hall. The fortunate ones, however, enjoyed a pleasant evening. The euchre prize was won by Mr. Marr, with Mr. Chandler 2nd and Mrs. Chandler 3rd. The forty-fives competition was won by Mrs. Prout. The Ladies’ Social Committee served a dainty supper.

A competition for a hox of chocolates was won by Mrs H. Betley. Extras were played by Mr Gibson, of Tiroroa, and well received.

Congratulations on the formation of a women’s branch of the New Zealand Labour Party in Westport were received from the following women’s branches: Auckland, Te Kuiti, Napier, Carterton, Wanganui, Lower Hutt, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. These messages were all received with loud applause. The hon. secretary, Mrs I. Ryan, states the function was a financial success, and as a result a substantial donation will be forwarded to the New Zealand Labour Party’s Campaign Fund.'

Sporting: Swimming enthusiasts arc looking forward to seeing J. Davis and D. Symes, who give a dem'onstation in the municipal baths next Thursday. Davis uses the “Japanese high sail” style which was so successful at the last Olympic Games. The Borough Council is carrying out extensive repairs to the seating accommodation at the baths in readiness for the coming season.

The Buller ' Tennis Sub-Association will meet at Granity on Friday evening to draw up fixtures for the inter club competition.
