HOLIDAY PAY
FOUNDRY MEN STRIKE. • [Per Press Association., DUNEDIN, November 29. As a protest, against an alleged unfair holiday system, all the 180 employers of Shacklock’s South End Foundry, struck this morning, after a stop-work meeting, at which it was decided to cease work for the day. The basis of the men’s grievance is that instead of the customary closing down on December 24, the management decided to close the works on December 9, re-opening on January 3. The men claim that they will lose the benefit of holiday pay for three statutory holidays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The spokesman for the men said that they did not object to two extra weeks’ holiday, but to being given the two weeks before Christmas.

KING’S BIRTHDAY HOLIDAY.
CHRISTCHURCH, November 29.
The possibility of employers naving to pay factory workers for two King’s birthdays, this year, was pointed out by the secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners (Mr E. C. Sutcliffe) to-day. This is because the King's birthday was observed on June 9, but no validating legislation has yet been passed, and factory workers employed on the actual date, December 13, will be entitled to treble pay.
