RISING IN BRITAIN. RUGBY, August 17. The c?nst of living on July 31 was about 55 per cent, above the level in July, 1914, for food only. The average increase was 40 per cent. There has been no change during the month in the average levels, but there has been a substantial rise since August 1936, when the rise, as compared with 1914, was 46 per cent, for all items, and 20 per cent, for food only.

RAILWAYMEN’S WAGE INCREASE. RUGBY, August 17. After the announcement last week of the Railway Staff National Tribunal’s decision by which 500,000 rail way workers were awarded a wage increase estimated to cost about £2,900,000 a year, an award has been made on the claim of the railway shopmen. The basic rates will be increased by Is a week and 6d a week for the different grades, and annual leave with pay will be given to all employee in railway workshops after 12 months continuous service, beginning in 1938.
