STOCKTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] The Stockton school children, accompanied by Mr Roberts (head teacher) left for Christchurch on Tuesday morning. In addition, Mesdames Fleming, Robertson and Taylor are travelling with the children. . It is anticipated that the excursionists will return to Stockton on Saturday. When in Christchurch, Mrs Fleming will be visiting her eldest son, James, who has been residing in enristchurch for approximately eighteen pion ths. Mr J. Lambert, who has been indisposed for some three weeks, is now on the road to complete recovery. Messrs Martin, Copeland and McKerra haye been off work as a result of injuries received in the mine. After making a very strong fight against the serious injuries received m the Stockton mine, on August 3rd, Mr J. Jack died In the Buller Hospital on Saturday. The Stockton mine was idle on Monday, when the late .Mr Jack was buried at the Orowaiti Cemetery at 1 p.m. The funeral was a large one. There Is general sympathy for those who are left to mourn his loss. The late Mr J. Jack, had not been working in the Stockton mine very long. He was formerly working tor the Westport Coal Company, in the Millerton mine. Mr R. Jack (Secretary of the Millerton Miners Union) is a cousin of the deceased. An inquest was held on Saturday in Westport, before the Coroner, Mr E. R. Fox. Once again we were brought face to face with the fact that death lingers overhead for the miners. Mrs Ilton has again taken over the duties of Postmistress at the Stockton Post Office. Mrs Ilton spent some time in the Nelson district during her holidays, and took advantage of the visit to look up some old friends and former residents of the Buller district. The Stockton junior rugby team visited Ngakawau on Saturday to try conclusions with Denniston. Pirates in the Prince Memorial Cup, first round. Pirates were the better side,, and won the game by six points to nil. Mr J. iNelson had charge of the game. Westport Hearts paid a visit to Stockton on Sunday, to play the local soccerites. The weather was beautifully fine as the teams came on to the field, and the ground was in the best condition for football since the season started. Stockton lined up as follows: Goal, W. Shearer; full-backs, Miller and McGregor; Half-backs, Morgan, Chippendale and Fleming; Forwards, R. Wiskers, J. Morgan, D. Miller, H. Fitzsimmons and S. Chippendale. In the first half, neitfier side looked like scoring until about fifteen minutes before half-time. D. Miller and J. Morgan scored for Stockton, and the Westport team managed to place the ball in the net before lemons. In the second half, Stockton kept up continued pressure and added five more goals. A. Chippendale scored from a penalty. D. Millar scored three goals, and H. Fitzsimmonds netted one. Westport were thus defeated by seven goals to one. Mr C. Steele was the referee. The game was for the Toll Cup. The Stockton team is improving, and continued perseverence with the young players should guarantee soccer coming to the front in the Buller once again. Mr B. Gina, a native of the Solomon Islands, paid a visit to Stockton on Sunday. Mr Gina delivered a sermon in the Stocktori Hall to a good audience. The meeting was held under the auspices of the'Methodist Church. The Stockton mines continue to work the full ten days per fortnight. The Executive of the Ngakawau Miners' Union was due to meet the manager on Sunday, to draw up a new local agreement. This agreement, provides for matters not covered in Lhe district general agreement for the mines on the West Coast. Mrs E. Smith and Mrs A. Bradlev are visiting Christchurch. They left on Tuesday by private car. Miss Simpson of Seddonville, spent I the week-end with Mr and Mrs C. Steele, of Stockton. t Mr H. Bettley, junr., paid a visit to Stockton last Sunday, making the trip with the Westport soccer players. The ballot for national officials and Australian delegate, took place on Wednesday. Messrs Mcßean and Berdinner have undertaken the task of giving the schoolboys instructions in the art of rugby football. The Stockton ladies held the Westport hockeyites to a draw on the Stockton ground last week. Mrs T. Williams of Westport, paid a visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Lambert on Sunday. Mr Bradley, of Westport, was a visitor to Stockton last Sunday. The Stockton Co-operative Picture Company screened “The Dancing Pirate” last Sunday to a splendid audience. Due to the fact that there are no pictures shown in Millerton, the Stockton talkies are surprisingly well patronised.
