Large Entry List EXCELLENT CONTESTS. Yesterday, the second day of the Eisteddfod, was a busy one for competitors and officials, there being large classes to dispose of. The competition was again very keen, the judges finding difficulty in separating the competitors. The attendance was an improvement on the previous day, but there is still rooms for increased patronage. The classes for to-day are again very large. Smith, "My Hero.” The judge said that the pieces were not sung in musical comedy style, two of the competitors being rather shy The recalled competitors chose selections that suited them and sang very well. He would impress upon the vocalists again to sing with temperament, it was no use just singing a song; expression was wanted. Violin Solo, under 13 years—Final: G. Kitchingham, “Fairies’ Waltz.” The judge said that the winner was quite outstanding, while the second competitor also played nicely. The section was very good. English Song, any voice—Final: Mr W H. Baird, “The Lute Player,” 80 pts 1; Mr. R. E. Guthrie, "O Lovely Night,” 78 pts., 2; Mr. M. Marshall, “There was a Jolly Miller,” 74 pts.. 3. The only competitors. The judge said the winner had a very good voice. He was at times not quite clear and his voice was inclined to tighten up. The second competitor, too, had a good vofee, and his words were exceptionally clear. The third placed competitor sang very well and had a good voice, but was inclined to force. The judge said that this was a verj interesting section and the little tots were lovely. They all danced quite well. The main fault was that, before the salute, the competitors did not bring their heel? together and keep their feet out. Humorous Recital (no properties), 16 and over —Recalls: Miss M. Miss Agnew said that she was very pleased with the little tots in this section. They were all very good. She found it hard to separate the two competitors and placed them both equal in first place. Recitation, 16 and over (final) — Miss V. Richardson 79pts, 1; Mr W. Reynolds 77pts, 2. The judge said that he was rather disappointed in this class. Sean Triubhais, over 10 (final)--Billie Addis 84pts, 1; Ngaire Brown and Kath Thomson, SOpts, equal 2. The judge said that this was a very good section and quite difficult to judge. Most of the mistakes made were small. Competitors in the sean tribhais must keep their heads up. Violin Solo, any age (final) —Mavis Blake “Concertino,” 85pts, 1; Clara Keating “Le Cygne” and Roberta McNeish "Un Soir a Portici” equal. Slpts, 2. Mr Davies thought this was a wonderful section, all playing very well. The winner played outstandingly, never making a mistake. She was quite unaffected by being stopped at the beginning. The playing by the accompaniste, of such a difficult piece when shg had not seen it previously was indeed a great performance. The other two competitors he placed equal second. Miss Keating played charmingly and had a very good finish, the other competitor also being good, but was not quite on pitch. Vocal Solo (final)—Miss E. Scott, 82pts, 1; Mr C. Tylee-Porter, 79pts, 2. The judge said that the young lady placed first sang charmingly and with ease, and was not forced. The young man had very good interpretation, though he was not as good as in the afternoon, and was inclined to be forced.

Goodall and K. Thomson 73pts, equal 3. The judge thought that this was an excellent class. The winner gave a wonderful performance. The first Costume Ballet was staged last evening, and others will follow throughout the festival. The second section of the Tap Dm.ce (l-> years and over) was also danced, while Instrumental Music (first section) was also heard.
