RADIO BEACONS
Two For Wellington FIRST NEARLY READY. (Per Press Association], WELLINGTON, August 18. “Early next month, the new wireless transmission beacon on Baring Head will guide ships into Wellington harbour in all kinds of weather during the hours between darkness and dawn,” said the Minister of Marine, Hon P. Fraser, in a statement today. “In addition, when fog shrouds Cook Strait and the waterway to the capital city, an electric eye will automatically warn the keepers at the Lighthouse station to,switch over immediately from a clear weather programme to one indicating dense mist”. “it recognised,” added Mr. Fraser, “that there are many disadvantages and limitations attached to navigation by one beacon. In view of this, the Government have decided to place a similar beacon on Cape Campbell. When this beacon is in operation, probably about the end of the years, all vessels in the localities where bearings cross favourably will get a bearing on Baring Head ano another on Cape Campbell, which will give their approximate position at once. As soon as Baring Head has been properly tested, orders will be placed for equipment for Stephens Island, Mokohinau, and Cuvier Island.
