McLean (assistant-secretary*), It was decided to notify all schools that secondary and primary school children were to assemble at the Recreation Ground at 1.15 p.m. under lhe charge of Mr Silcock, teachers and Marist Brothers. It was also decided that all children’s tickets be issued at the Recreation Ground and not at the Park.

It was decided to approach the Star and United Clubs for the use of their pavilions for changing of the teams engaged in the curtain-raiser. It was decided on the motion of Messrs Silcock and Cornish that the junior grade curtain-raiser be eliminated owing to the effect on the ground. Mr Ryan said that he would rather see the other curtain-raiser cancelled. They should encourage their own teamse.

The motion was carried and it was decided that the teams use the StatClub’s pavilion and that the curtainraiser be played at 1 p.m. The Buller Rugby Union extended thanks for the entertainment provided for its Seddon Shield team. The Greymouth Golf Club extended an invitation to the Springboks to use the Club’s links during their stay in Greymouth. —It was decided to hand the invitation to the manager of the team. The South Canterbury Rugby Union wrote asking that accommodation be arranged for the referee of the Springboks’ match at Greymouth and advised that Mr Eggleton s accommodation at Timaru had been arranged. Mr R. W. Cooper, Wataroa, thanked the Union for the attention given his son during his stay in hospital and enclosed a donation. It was decided to send Mr Coopei a letter of thanks and to forward the donation to the insurance fund. The Ro toman u schoolboys thanked the Union for its gift of a football. A sub-committee consisting of Mcbsrs Baillie, Jamieson, McLean and Adams was appointed to finalise arrangements for the omner to the Springboks. r rhe tender of Gibbs Motois for the conveyance of the scnoolboys team to Motueka was accepted, ami the Westland Sub-Union is to be asked to assemble the Hokitika boys at Greymouth. Mr Silcock was appointed manager of the team. i _. , It was decided that the combined team assemble at the Park Hotel at 1.30 p.m. next Wednesday. R. R. King was appointed captain and G. Orman vice-captain of the combined team. . Mr C. H. Hoskin was appointed line umpire. . It was-decided to recommend that tne combined team practice at the Recreation Ground on the Monday and Tuesday before the match. It was decided to ask the United and Pirate Clubs to explain why their junior and senior teams respectively defaulted. TT . The chairman said that the Union would have to deal severely with defaulting teams. Mr Williams, said that the rope round the side-line at Hokitika had sheen the cause of Gilbert’s accident on Saturday. They had previously written to the Sub-Union in reference to the matter. He moved that the Sub-Union be requested to have the rope removed immediately. Air Guy seconded the motion whicn was carried. The third grade competition was declared closed, with Blaketown the winners. It was left to the Fixtures Committee to arrange grounds and times for all matches, to be announced on Wednesday. , Accounts amounting to £227 2s ixa were passed for payment. It was decided to thank Mr Spiers for the provision of a radio set foi the test match at Wellington. The resignation of the secretary (Mr Joyce) was received, and on the motion of the chairman, was accepted with regret. Mr O. McLean (assistant-secretary) was appointed secretary. It was decided that the next meeting be held at 7 o’clock on Monday evening next. The appointment of a selector m place of Mr Joyce was held over until the next meeting.

SECRETARY FAREWELLED.

Prior to last evening’s meeting officials and representatives of the Union and clubs assembled to bid farewell to Mr J. E. who leaves on Friday on transfer to Whangarei. Mr A. A. Adams presided and refer- < red in complimentary terms to the work done by Mr Joyce in the hve years he had been secretary of the Union. He had at all times been wonderfully efficient and had been most courteous to all players and officials, who deeply regretted his departure. It was the hope of all members that Mr Joyce would hnd his new surroundings congenial and would soon hnd that he had time to devote to the game. Everyone wished Mr and Mrs Joyce continued prosperity and happiness in their new home Mr Adams then presented Mr Jo™ with a cheque for £2sfrom the Union and Clubs with their best Wl Messrs W- G. Scott (Blaketown), I Steel (Kumara), J- D. Cullen £Cei tic) G. Hughes (Star), T. P. Ryan (United), F. W. Baillie (Cobden) and Adams (for the southern clubs) joined in the tribute, all paying high tributes to Mr Joyce’s work, and the tactful manner in which he had handled the Union’s relations with clubs. Mr C. H. Hoskin on behalf of the Referees’ Association expressed the thanks of. the Association for Mr Joyce’s assistance to all referees. He presented Mr Joyce with a case of pipes from the referees of the distri Mr Joyce, in reply, thanked the speakers for their remarks and sari 'that he had thoroughly enjoyed his association with the Union and clubs, and deeply regretted his departure. In his capacity as secretary, he had done no more than he was expected to do. Thanking the Union, clubs, Referees 'Association for their gifts,

Mr Joyce said they would serve to remind him of many years’ happy association with them. UNION PRESENTATION. At the conclusion of the meeting, the President said that Mr Joyce’s resignation was received with the greatest regret, but as it meant promotion for him, there was no other choice. He felt he was expressing the feelings of every member of the Union when he said that he wished Mr and Mrs Joyce and family every happiness in Whangarei. He then asked Mr Joyce’s acceptance of a gold-mounted inscribed fountain pen and pencil with the personal good wishes of each member of the Union. Messrs Guy, McLean, O’Donnell, Eggleton, Kyle, Jamieson, Cornish, and members of the press supplemented Mr Adams’ remarks and thanked Mr Joyce for many courtesies. In reply, Mr Joyce thanked the president and speakers for their remarks and for the gift. He was pleased to know that his work was appreciated and sain "that he was deeply grateful for the assistance all members of the Union had given him whilst he had been secretary.
