LONDON, August 14. Last week’s promise of a continuance of rising markets has not materialised, partly owing to unfavourable developments in the Far East. Thonc there has been little fresh buying, there also has been little selling, consequently prices stood up fairly well. The market still takes the view that there will be a strong revival in the Autumn, especially as trade statistics continue good. • The outstanding feature of the week has been a slump in Chinese-Ja-panese bonds, most of which are now around 20 per cent, below the levels of a month ago. Gilt-edged .stocks, however, are firm. The Dominions are receiving good support. Industrials are inclined to quietness, speculative interests having evaporated. They closed dull and uncertain. Newspaper shares are lower, owing to the increased price of paper. Optimism in Tooley Street has not been maintained. Prices broke in the midweek, and butter sold as much as 4s per cwt. down. The effect has been to destroy the confidence necessary to the sustained recovery tnat some traders anticipate. Apart from spasmodic improvements in the near future, the outlook indicates a lower! market developing. Danish remains pegged at 127 s per cwt., but the weakness of Empire butter caused a Siberian and Dutch fall. They are now in poor demand at declining rates. Cheese developed a sympathetic weakness. Quotations are nominal. / ■ " ALBERTA AND THE BANKS. CALGARY, August 13. A warning that interference by

the Ottawa Government in Alberta’s affairs might be dangerous, has been sent to the Prime Minister, Mr W. L. Mackenzie King, by the local Social Credit League. JAPANESE WHALERS FOR ANTARCTIC. TOKIO, August 15. Whaling enterprises are preparing to send vessels to the Antarctic without delay, and are prepared to make the largest possible catch, realising that the incoming season may be the last in which the Japanese are not bound by an international convention. .JAPAN’S SHEEP INDUSTRY. RAPID INCREASE. TOKIO, August 15. The Minister of Agriculture stated there were 61,000 sheep and 21,000 farms in Japan at the end of 1936, both gaining 29 per cent, over 1935.
