REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). REEFTON, August 15. The growth of noxious weeds, particularly broom, in Inangahua is becoming almost alarming. On the sides of many streets it is growing with extraordinary rapidity, while the river bed and hills surrounding the town are also covered with the pest. Broom, perhaps spreads quicker than any other growing shrub, as when seeding the seeds jump many feet. It, is up to the local authorities, not only to enforce the Noxious Weeds Act, but to do their part and keep the streets clear of this, and thus not allow it to spread on to privatelyowned land. Fine weather, the first time for some years, favoured the Catholic parishioners’ ball at Inangahua Junction on Friday night, and the function was a brilliant success. Many visitors were present' from Westport, the Buller Valley and Reefton, and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent by all. Dancing was continued until the early hours of the morning. A sports attraction is set down for Friday evening next in the Gymnasium Hall when among othei' attractions will be a tug-o’-war, four wrestling bouts and miniature rifle shooting. A prize of £lO is offered for the tug-o’-war, and there promises to be entries from nearly every centre in.the lnangahua as well as the Grey Valley. A most enjoyable evening should be the result. At the Fire Brigade’s forty-fives, the prizes were won by Mrs Sharpe and Mr Chadwick. Miss Farrell and Mr W. Lockington won the lucky prizes and Miss Judith Dobson, the box of chocolates.
