[Our Own Correspondent] Short of a Quorum: WESTPORT, August 14. Owing to the absence of the necessary quorum, the quarterly meeting of the Buller Valley Medical Association convened for last evening lapsed. The chairman (Mr R. Higman), commenting on the position, said it was to be deplored that sufficient interest was not displayed in the affairs of thd Association that would secure an attendance of 25 members out of a total of 800. The apathy of members of a body that was providing such great benefits to the bulk of the workers in the Buller district was difficult to understand and was indeed a matter for regret. It was agreed to qonvene another meeting for Friday evening of next week, when a comprehensive report of the discussions with Mr Meachan, M.P., regarding matters of concern to the Association, will be presented. Card Tournament:.

The Labour Party’s card tournament held last evening again attracted a capacity attendance, all available tables being occupied. The euchre prize was won by Mr Solomon with Mrs Spencer and Mrs Lawry m second and third positions respectively. The forty-fives competition was won by Mrs Dixon. The ladies’ committee provided an excellent supper. Indecent Assault:

A. young man, aged 26, single, a local resident, was arrested last evening, charged with indecently assaulting a young woman, also a local resident. He appeared before Mr E. R. Fox, J.P. this morning and on the application of the police a remand was granted until Friday, 20th inst. Bail, self in £2OO or one of £2OO, or two of £lOO each, was granted. Mr M. B. Personal; A quiet wedding Look place last evening at St. Canice’s Church, when Patrick D. Twohill, second son of Mr and Mrs J. D. Twohill, Highland Park, Wellington, was married to Rosina Marie McDonnell, daughter of Mr C. McDonnell, of Westport. Miss Noline Cargill was bridesmaid and Mr J. Brown was best man. Rev. Father Phelan officiated. A reception was later held at the Melbourne Hotel, when a large number of guests were entertained. The happy couple will take up their residence at New Plymouth, whence Mr Twohill has been transferred in the service of the Bank of New Zealand. The death took place at the .O’Conor Home last evening of Mr Hugh Hagen at the age of 78 years. Deceased was a native of County Antrim, Ireland, and come to. New Zealand some 54 years ago and resided for most of that time in Westport. He is survived by four sons, Frank, Hugh, Henry and John, also a daughter, Mrs Knox, of the North Island. Messrs T. Parfitt, T. Shaw, F. H. Morgan (Westport), J. Warren and M. Clarke (Denniston) and R. G. Tunnecliffe (Karamea) were recently sworn in as Justices of the Peace by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M. Shipping: The Kaiwarra arrived in port yesterday. The Kekerangu sailed yesterday. The Wingatui is announced to sail to-morrow morning for Wellington. The Kaimai part loads here on Monday, completing at Greymouth.
