TEST HOCKEY
N.Z. VICTORY Australia Beaten I—o MANNING CUP RETAINED. FAust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received August 15, at 6.30 p.m.) , SYDNEY, August 15. New Zealand defeated Australia In the hockey test for the Manning Memorial Cup by 1 goal to nil. The attendance was four thousand. Although the ground was sodden, the weather remained fine. Australia fielded a verv nnor side compared with the inter-state teams seen at the carnival last week. New Zealand were easily the better team. Fine play by the Australian backs prevented a greater score in New Zealand’s favour. Clark the New Zealand back was the outstanding player on the Held, hitting the ball with tremendous power, He twice hit the ball the full length of the field in the air, giving an amazing exhibition of the game. The New Zealand halfbacks Robertson and Watson were splendid in attack and they were greatly assisted by O. Dey who scored New Zealand’s only goal from a penalty corner. Duffield and Roughton were always dangerous in the the visiting forwards.
