TRANS-TASMAN MAILS
SPEEDING-UP QUESTION. [Per Press Association]. WELLINGTON, August 13. In reply to complaints by Wellington businessmen concerning the irregularity of the mail service across Tasman Sea, the Postmaster-General, Hon. F. Jones, stated that no contracts existed with shipping companies for the transport of mails at regular intervals to and from Australia and places further afield. Mr Jones said that the Postal Department took advantage of the best steamer connections offering, and an expenditure of less than one thousand pounds a month was incurred for the carriage of mails across Tasman Sea, so that, considering the running expenses of the steamers over this route it would be appreciated that the Department was not in the position to dictate to the shipping owners on the sailing schedules that should be observed. He was s'tire, however, that the present complaints would be removed when the Trans-Tasman air mail service was in operation.
