REEFTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] REEFTON, August 10. While going up the Waiuta Hill on Friday afternoon, Mr R. Cochrane’s motor car came into collision with a lorry, with the result that it was forced over the bank. The occupants, Mr and Mrs Cochrane, were, however, not injured in any way. Mr Fred Weiblitz sustained a severe loss at Merrijigs last night, losing all his possessions, clothes, etc., when a fire took place in his hut. He had left a fire in the building while on a visit to a neighbour, and when he returned there was nothing left hut a heap of ashes. The fortnightly euchre and dance held by the Inangahua Junction branch of the New Zealand Labour Party at Lyell on Saturday evening was again an outstanding success. Fortunately the weather was dry, although a trifle cold, and the card enthusiasts turned out in full force. The winners were Mrs Mooney (tablecloth), Mr J. Baker (shaving set). The consolation prizes were given to Mrs E. Baker (box of chocolates) and Mr W. Sidwell (cigarettes). The ladies of the social committee provided an excellent supper after which the rest of the evening was spent in dancing. The pianist, Mr J. Whitnail was unfortunate in having his thumb put out while playin gfootball in the afternoon and how he managed to play for the dance is a mystery, and it must have been an ordeal for him. Although he did not play with quite his usual vim, he put up a very creditable performance indeed, and the committee’s thanks are certainly due to him for his action. Extras were played bv Mr G. Griffiths and Mr R. Gussette. Before the conclusion of the dance the secretary of the social committee (Mr A. Bedford) presented the prizes and thanked patrons for their regular attendance.
