WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Labour Matters: WESTPORT, August 10. Mr W. H. Woodcock was in the chair at the fortnightly meeting of the West port branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. The attendance of members was large. Mr Dobson, who resigned the position of caretaker of tlie Labour Rooms was voted the sum of fl for services rendered. Mr W. O’Neill was elected to the position. The possibility of a visit to the Coast by the Prime Minister (Hon. Savage) was referred to and in the event of Greymouth being included in the itinerary it was decided to forward a request asking that the tour be extended to include Buller. It was decided that any executive member absenting himself from three consecutive general meetings should forfeit his appointment to the Executive Committee. The meeting strongly opposed the efforts of a (section of the public to secure the appointment of Mr H. R. Young To the Legislative Council and it was urged, pending the complete abolition of that body, that Mr W. H. Woodcock should be given recognition. The ladies’ social committee submitted a financial statement which revealed a credit balance of £7. The committee also announced that the sum of £l5 had been raised for the piano fund. The fine efforts of the social committee in such a short time was favourably commented upon, especially considering the big initial expense that had to be met. A recommendation that £5 be donated to the campaign fund and £2 to the Standard fund will be considered by the ladies of the branch at their monthly meeting to be held on Thursday next.

Buller Rugby Union: Mr F. Keating was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Buller Rugby Union held last evening. The West Coast Union wrote asking that Buller players included in the combined team to meet the Springboks on August 25, should assemble at Greymouth on Monday evening, prior to the game. The letter also advised that Buller members of the 1921 combined team would be guests of the New Zealand Rugby Union at the game. The West Coast Union asked to be supplied with all such names, also the names of the members of the Buller Rugby Union. The information is to be supplied. A request from Mr C. Walker to display the Seddon Shield in his shop window was acceded to. An applicant for a ticket for the test match at Wellington is to be advised that all had been allocated, but if one could be secure! it would be forwarded on. It was agreed that all applications for tickets for the second test be in writing, including any verbal requests made to the secretary so far. Old Boys were declared winners of the Senior Shield and Westport runners-up. These teams will play off for the Ambury Cup. Regarding the Albion Cup competition, it was decided to call a meeting of delegates from all clubs on Saturday evening to go into the question of evening up the competition, which, under the present rules, provides for town and country teams playing two rounds in different sections and the section winners playing off in the final. This season 1 iroroa is classed as a town team with its home ground on Victoria Square, and with three other town .clubs, the competition would be unbalanced with only two in the country. The country section could possibly be finalised alter two matches and the winners would have a long wait to play m the final Each club at the meeting will be entitled to three delegates, with plenary voting powers. The fixture.-, will- be carried on in the meantime. Messrs Keating, Craddock, Gonley and McEnaney were appointed to intei view the Borough Council Reserve Committee regarding the prvoision of seating accommodation inside tlm railing on the grandstand side of Victoria Square” Mr H. Casey, manager of the Buller Seddon Shield team, reporting on the trip to Greymouth, made fpecial mention of the attention given to the team by the loca manager, Mr Eggleton, of Greymouth. The host and hostess, Mr and Mrs D. Dowell, also treated the team well and Dr. Moore was very generous m giving free attention to two injured Buller players. A vote of thanks was accorded to all for their many con siderations, and also to Mrs Dunn, o Barrytown Hotel, who catered so well for the team on its return on Sun dav It was decided to ask Golden Bay-Motueka Union to confirrn August2B, as the date for the Seddon Shield challenge game.
