“Do you know New Zealand produces the most excellent tobacco?” writes “Lone Hand” in the “People’s Journal.” “It was the ship's doctor on the run out, who told me, but when he said this tobacco was “toasted” I reckoned he was pulling my leg. I soon found it was true, after I landed though; toasted it is, and that’s one reason why it’s so popular in the “Britain of the South.” “But why toast it?” you may ask, “and what difference can that make?” Toasting (a rather complex process), makes all the difference. It extracts the nicotine from the leaf and thus makes it pure and wholesome, besides helping to give it its beautiful flavour and very fine aroma. I liked this tobacco so much I got to prefer it to any other, and so, I quickly discovered, do most New Zealanders. The present season is likely to be one of the poorest for many years for opossum trapping on the West Coast. The stamping officer for the district, Mr. W. Hughes, has to date received only 2,423 skins, and it is unlikely that there will be another 1,000 when stamping ceases at the end of this month. The best recent year for trapping in the Grey district, which extends from the Teremakau River to Ikamatua and Punakaiki, was 1934, when no less than 15,403 skins were stamped. In 1935, when there was a sharp drop in prices, only 3,038 skins were stamped. Last year there was an improvement to 6,876 skins, and so far this year only 2,423 have been stamped. From the above figures it wil be seen that there were more opossums trapped in the 1934 season than in the three subsequent seasons taken together. A number of the skins sent in for stamping have been obtained by farmers, who can obtain permits lor 'rapping for 2/6, whereas the regular trapper has to pay £2,
