NO MORE “SEA SLUMS” New Accommodation Rules [Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.l (Received Augiyt 6, 8.50 p.m.) LONDON, August 6. “After an inquiry lasting for seven years, the Board of Trade’s representative and the ship-owners’, officers’, and seamen’s organisations agreed to regulations to abolish ‘sea slums,’ declares Hector Bywater, writing in the “Daily Telegraph.” “The use of the forecastle for seamen’s berths is henceforth to be forbidden. Accommodation rnust be provided amidships or aft, as the forecastle is often a death trap in the event of a collision. “Bathrooms and hot showers are to be compulsory. All foreign-going ships of twenty-five hundred tons or over must have a hospital. Other regulations are provided for minimum standards for messrooms, ventilation, lighting, and locker accommodation.”
