REEFTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] REEFTON, August 2. Messrs D. A. McVicar and T. H. Lee, who attended the Arbitration Court at Nelson in connection with the dredgemen’s application for a new award, returned last week end, Mr. McVicar on Friday and Mr. Lee on Saturday. A most enjoyable evening was spent on Saturday night when over 20 guests paid a surprise visit to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey’s residence, upper Broadway. During the evening several games and competitions were played. The following won the competitions: Singing, Mr. H. Honey; Lucky Parcel, Mrs. Harvey. Items were given as follows: Pianoforte solos, Miss T. Pearce and Mr. Harvey; solos, Miss M. Honey, Messrs G. McLaughlan, G. Honey, D. Buchanan, H. Honey and W. Harvey; duet, Mesdames Kearns and Pearce; quartette. Messrs F. Kearns, A. Hill, G. Honey and T. Prior; mouth organ solos, Messrs W. Honey, W. Ramsay, T Prior and G. Honey. The accompan-ists-were Miss T. Pearce, Mrs. A Hill ■ and Mr. W. Harvey. A dainty supper was provided, and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a very enjoyable evening to a close.

Mr M. Waddell, junr., sustained a serious injury yesterday. He was working with a chisel when by some means it- slipped and the tool entered his cheek and penetrated right into an eye. Dr. Wicken was at once summoned and he advised that the injured man be taken to a specialist at once, and Mr. and Mrs. Waddell and son left for Christchurch by motor car yesterday afternoon. Mr. D. Enright, of Christchurch, formerly a well known resident of the district, arrived in Reefton last weekend and is staying at the Railway Hotel.

At the Reefton Jockey Club meeting on Saturday evening, in replying to a query whether there were many horses in North Canterbury that were likely to compete at the Reefton Meeting, the Chairman pointed out that there were invariably a number from that district at each meeting, and instanced that at the last Autumn Meeting of the Club, one actually came over the Lewis Pass and competed. This was Top Rank, who afterwards went on to Nelson and Blenheim, winning at both those meetings.
