Dominion Contest WIN FOB TIMARU.

(Per Press Association.) TIMARU, March 28. The Dominion Pipe Bands’ Contest was held in Timaru yesterday and prov Zd great success. The weather was dull but fine, in the afternoon, but the ’evening light rain fell. This did not deter a Mg crowd from to hear the test selections which were nlaved in the new sound pavilion at Boy. The street march™ watched by thousands, while the quie step and drum majors’ display at the Cakdonlan grounds attracted a crowd of upwards of seven thousand Four A Grade and four B grade bands competed and put up splendid performances which delighted the big crowd. Zeatad tie Scottish regimental bands the New Zealand bands compared favourably With pipe bands in any part of the W °T l he Timaru Highland Pipe Band, which won everything at Wanganui last year, again won the championship but the othejr three bands put up fine performances, the City of Christ.hn.eh Band giving an outstanding display. In the drum majors’ event Dunedin deserved its success in the select^ n ’_ in which Timaru and City of Christ church spoilt their chances by early mistakes, though there were only three points between the four bands. The dressing of the bands was a feature of the championships, there being I only half a point between the first and last bands. . t>._„ The win of the MaeKenzie Pipe Band in the B. Grade was most popular and was thoroughly deserved. The band comes from Fairlie in th e heart of the MaeKenzie country, the players being scattered over a wide area. Christchurch Scottish had a comfortable lead in the quickstep, but finished eight points behind the MaeKenzie Band in the test selection.
