REV. FATHER, J. HERRING, S.M.

The death of the Reverend Father Joseph Herring, S.M., agC’d 53 years, is announced. He collapsed while taking part in th c Corpus Christi procession at Manly. Born in Tasmania and educated at St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, the lata Father Herring later joined the Marist Order and was ordained by the late Archbishop Redw-ood in 1909. Father Herring was well-known in Wellington as he was stationed for some time nt St. Mary of the Angels, Bouleott Street. He wa.s for some years Parish Priest at Reefton, being succeeded there by Rev. Father Seynfour, S.M., the last member of the Marist Order to be in charge of the Reefton parish before thp arrival of Rev. Father J. Butler
Prior to going to Sydney, where he was a parish priest of Hunter’s Hill, he was for sc.weral years in charge of the parish at Whangarei. A man of exceptionally strong physique, his death has com e as a great shock to all who knew him. His bright, genial disposition and untiring energy made him deservedly popular in the parishes where he laboured. He is survived by two brothers, fh e Rev. Father A. T. Herring, S.M., of the Marist Mission House, Brisbane, and Mr F. Herring, of Wellington, and two sisters, Mrs M. J. Kennedy, Island Bay, and Sister Mary Evangelist, of the Convent of Mercy, Aro Street, Wellington. Solemn 'Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of th 0 Angels Wellington this morning, at 9 u.m.
