People in the United States are taking a great interest in the Dionne quintuplets, and as many as 700 a day go to see them, states a Canadian visitor to New Zealand, Dr. David Long. He said that it was a great testimony 10 the skill of the doctors that they had been kept alive, as this was the only case in medical history where quintuplets had lived. There was no doubt, he said, that if they had been given back to their parents they would not have been alive to-day.

A complaint that a number of owners simply brought their dogs along to football matches on Saturdays for exercise, was made by the President, Mr. A. A. Adams, at last evening’s meeting of tho West Coast Rugby Union. Some of them were big, young dogs, he. said, and they ran about everywhere, getting out on the playing field and being generally an unmitigated nuisance. People who intended going- to see the games should leave their dogs at home. Anyone might be bitten in trying to drive away the dogs. It was decided to advertise that dogs are not to be in future allowed on Rugby Park. One member suggested that it be stated that poison had been laid, and that this would prompt owners to keep dogs away. The frolics of a large Alsatian and a small black terrier last Saturday amused many spectators, while the play remained at the other end of the field, but on the previous Saturday no fewer than five poodles together had a game of their own on tho field, until three of them became mixed up with the footballers.

Judgment for defendant was given by Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., in the Magi crate’s Court, Nelson, on Monday in a claim for £l4 14s lid, balance of an account for timber supplied by the Omoto Sawmill Co., Ltd., to the defendant, (?. Sannazzzaro, of Nelson, fruit-grower. The Magistrate ill his discussion said: “The plaintiff, through its Nelson agent, verbally offered to supply timber to defendant on certain terms, and a dispute has arisen as to their nn.'ure. Had the ■quote’ been made by Irirtcr there wou'd have been no misunderstanding or mistake, ami the ease would not have come- to Court. When these unbusinesslike me.'hods are adopted, difficulty in proving the terms frequently arises, and in my opinion. <the Court should cast on the shoulders of the tradesmen the burden of producing convincing proof.’’ He said that, on the weight of the evidence, ho must, uphold the defence.

Cigarettes led to tin amusing breach of promise case at Adelaide recently. Juliet, it appeared, dotes on cigarettes, while Romeo loathes the sight—and smell—of them. So love’s young dream became a nightmare,. and quarrels were frequent. At last, the young man bluntly told the girl that if she wouldn’t give up smoking he’d have to give her up! Hence these tears! Amid roars of laughter some of tho early love letters were read out in court. At last the judge remarking that it seemed to be “a silly lovers’ quarrel,” advised the parties to retire and see if they couldn’t “make it up.” They did! The fascination that cigarettes possess for some women—men too! —is simply irresistible! Look at the run on Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold, the two leading cigarette blends. <o fragrant and soothing! Both are “toasted.” That’s why they’re so good—and so harmless! There are also three toasted brands for the pipe, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Cavendish and Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog). No finer tobaccos are manufactured. But beware of imitations!
