DENNISTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Personal: 'Mr. G. Jack of Donniston has been discharged from the local hospital and is now eonvalesent at his home. Mr. Jim Fairlie, who met with extensive injuries whilst engaged in tho mine, has been in the local hospital for several weeks, proceeded to .Westport Hospital for an X-Ray examination. Mr Angus MeLagan Miners’ National Secretary and Check or Workmans Inspector paid an official visit ol inspection to the Denniston rninos. Mr Dark, Postmaster at Denniston has resumed duties, after his annual holidays spent at Christchurch. Mr W. Warren has been visiting Ins parents Mr. and Mrs .1. Warrc-n of Denniston. Messrs B. Scott and W. McGinty who have been spending a holiday with their parents at Burnett’s Fnee have return to Nelson. Mr. and Mrs. Brock intend spending a holidav in the North Island during the school term holidays. Mr. and Mrs W. Beyron mine hosts of the Railway Hotel at Waimangaroa, have returned from a holiday spent up North. Mr. Beyiion’s health has greatlv improved recently. Mr.’ Jim Caldwell jun. garage proprietor of Denniston, has filed a petition of bankruptcy. . Air. McKie of Waimangaroa has left to reside in the Nelson district. Miss Olga Marsden late of the firm of Marsden’s store at Denniston is now in business at Blenheim, Denniston School: There was a fair attendance, Mr. M. Ilew'.tson being elected to the chair, and thanked all present for taking an interest in school affairs. The minutes were read and confirmed as correct. The balance sheet was road, several questions were answered. lhe balance sheets of the dental clinic and sports accounts were accepted as satisfactory. The committee’s ’ report also the headmaster’s report were accepted as satisfactory. The following were elected as a committee. Messrs R. Pollock. M. Brodie, 11. Pearson, J. Warren, W. Cooper, W. Black, J. Anderson. Mr. M. ilewitson, who has for many years been on the Committee and as chairman declined a nomination, but took the opportunity to wish the new Committee every success. Messrs Pollock and Pearson and Mr. Lockheart spoke in glowing terms of the wondCTiul service rendered by Mr. I-Icwitson and hope.d that he would be free to take an active interest next election. It was announced that a children’s fancy dress ball would be held in the Picture Hall on Friday 26 June in aid of the school funds. Av a meeting of the Committee Mr. H. Pearson was (dected secretary and Mr. J. Warren chairman. It is to be sincerely hoped that there will not be so many changes in the teaching staff as there has been during the past two years.

Denniston Band: There was a good attendance at the Band fortv-iivos and social. Ladies Ist prize Mrs Alexander with 12 wins. Gents, Air. C. ’'niith Ist.. .11 wins, Air. W Light boun 2nd., 10 wins.

Social ISend Off: There was a very happy gathering of bandsmen ami friends at a smoko tendered to Air. Arthur Lester who is shortly leaving the district to take up a' position at Levin Air. Lester was presented' with serviceable, leather suit case and many speakers spoke highly of Arthur’s sterling behaviour both as a bandsman, a sport and a citizen ami wished him every success. Air. Lester most suitably readied, though he looked forward with every hope of making good, he would often think of his comrades from childhood who he was leaving behind at .Denniston. A wonderful evening was spent and concluded with ‘‘He s a Jolly Good Fellow” Cheers, Social Hall: Tin. Burnett’s Face Committee are to be congratulated for their untiring efforts to raise sufficient funds to enable them’ to renovate the old Mission Hall at Burnett’s Face and make it a Social Hall for the community of Burnett’s Face. The carnival dance at Denniston was well attended, though the tempestuous weather kept many away. Alusie was rendered by Lester’s Orchestra, extras by Miss E. I’ullar and Air Sid Thomas of Nelson Alesss Rodgers and Alarr proved efficient Al’s.C. A plentiful supper was served bv the Ladies’ Committee and thoroughly appreciated. Monte Carlo Air. \V. Smith and Airs J. Stephens. (Balloon dance Air. W. Smith and Aliss B. Murph v. Lucky spot Air. S. Thomas and Aliss' J. Forsythe. The managenu nt of the W.C. Coy. had allowed the I’ght to run until 2 o’clock and dam 1 - iiPg was enjoyed till the early hours of the morning. The Commitee desire to thank all those who so ably assisted to make (ho function such a huge success.
