The Greymonth Municipal Lamias balance sheet showing assets £ll<a was received. Cr. Kent moved that the balance sheet be received and that the Band be congratulated on its work. The Grevmouth Fire Board wrote reonesting that the Council proceed with the water reticulation of Cobden as soon as possible. Mr Ivan Quinnev, applied lor lease of'section G M.R. 51, Preston Road.— Decided to reply stating that leases could be granted only alter the sections in this area had been put up auction. The Municipal Association forwarded leo-al opinion in regard Io drainage of lo?v-lyiug land at P.laketown lagoon (Iteaie Street) stating that the Council could compel the filling of land to street level. The Mayor in answer to Cr. Carroll said that the Council had decided to give the land to the Harbour Board To enable the construction of a street. The point to be settled was the level to which the land would have to be tilled. The Harbour Board proposed to level the land to within three feet, of the road. The Council would retuse Io "rant permits for new buildings it lhe"land was not tilled in to the Council *s satisfaction. Cr. Kent said that the Council should point out that permits could not be wanted until the land was filled to street level, and that it was io the Board’s advantage to do so. gineer. Cr. Carroll said that they had an al'ernative offer from the Harbour Board. It would be better to hand over the street and let the Board construct it. but insist that .1 should be filled to the required level The Engineer said it would havo cost the Council £4OO under the alternative offer. The Council had already advised the Harbour Board that the land must be lilted to the street level. Cr. Harker seconded the motion, which was carried. Wellington, wrote regarding interest on borough loans ((omieiled in A ictoria. Tim Mayor said that a number ot local bodies wished to take their case to the Privv Council but the Borough had decided not to take action. The action did not affect the Borough to anv great extent. In reply to Cr. Carroll, the Mayor said that' it was the Council s intention to pay full interest when the Privy Council’s decision was made known. Mr. 11. S. Nightingale, surveyor, forwarded sub-divisional plan on behalf of Mr. B. Timlale, of sections adjoining Devon Street, added to plan already approved, for consent of Council. —Approved. Mr. Tindale’s request was lor permission to deposit plan before the road on his sub-division is completed, so that purchasers may obtain titles to their land. It was agreed to give a permit for depositing of the plan, provided Mr. Tindale entered into a bond ot £l5O with one approved surety to complete the work as soon as possible. Mr. W. Meates, Eldon Lane, wrote complaining about the unkempt condition of the street.- —Referred to the Borough Engineer with power to act. Messrs. Joyce and Brosnan, forwarded memorandum of transfer Lot 7 D.P. 719 M.R., 198, A. L. Gibson, to D. AV. Morgan, for consent of Council. Consent granted. Messrs. Guinness and Kitchingham forwarded memore.ndum of lease which includes a grant, of right of way, A. G. Holder to Norman Hodgkiss, for consent of Council. —Consent granted. Mr. Thus. Coll applied for permission to erect a garage on Section 8, Moss Street, owned by him.—Referred to Town Planning Committee, Crs. Kent, and Carroll dissenting. Messrs. Hannan and Seddon torwarded memorandum of transfer Part Section 27(1, Cobden, E. Hornsby, to Thomas Hornsby, for consent. —Grant ed. Messrs. Guinness and Kitchingham forwarded memorandum of transfer, D. McGirr to M. M. O’Boyle for consent to sub-division. —Referred to Engineer to report. The West Coast Basketbell Association requested use of part of the northern end of the Recreation Ground adjacent to croquet lawn to enable them to lay two asphalt courts.

Cr. McGinley said that the Reserves Committee was agreeable to the request. but that it was thought nothing should be done until more land was filled in.

Cr. Neville-said that the ground applied for had been granted to the United Tenuis Club two years ago. There was room for only one court and because the Council had given the Tennis Club to understand that a lane would be provided, nothing was done. It was probable that an arrangement could be made with the Tennis Chib on the lines .suggested by the Basketball Association, but the Council could not grant them lhe use of the ground as it was already given to the 'Tennis Club. He moved that the request be referred to the Reserves Committee for consideration.

Seconding the motion, Cr. Kent said he saw no reason why the basketball girls could not bo given the use of lhe tennis courts in the meantime. Everything should be done to assist the game, and the tennis courts were on Council property. The motion was carried.

Major 0. E. Ransom, Salvation Army, Greymouth, wrote requesting the permission of the Council to stand in Mackay Street near the U.S.S. Coy’s offices, instead of in Boundary Street,

for their open air meetings on Friday evenings. Mr. Paterson moved that the request he referred io the Traflie Committee. Cr. Neville seconded the motion. The Mayor said that the Triadic Inspector had objected to the proposed stand in Mackay Street. Cr. Kent said that the Traffic Committee knew that the present position in Boundary Street was dangerous. Traflie on Friday night was also very congested in Mackay Street. It was desirable to move the Salvation Army from the present position ami he had suggested to the Traflie Inspector the foot of Tarapuhi Street would be more suitable. The Inspector agreed with this suggestion, lie (Cr. Kent) would suggest a trial in this position, lhe Army would be willing to give Tarapuhi Street a trial. He moved an amendment that they be given a trial at the foot of Tarapuhi Street. Cr. Caroll seconded the amendment. On being put to the meeting the amendment was lost. Crs. Kent, Canoll and McGinley voting in favour. The Mayor and Crs. Paterson. Harker and Neville opposed. The motion was subsequently carried. Cr. Carroll asked when the estimates would be ready for consideration. The Town Clerk replied that he hoped to have them ready for the next Finance Committee meeting. Cr.
