SATURDAY HALT-HOLIDAY.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I hear a petition is being circulated by a canvasser among suburban residents with a view t'o its being presented to Parliament, praying that the recent po<ll on the question of the half-holiday be upset, and that the half-holiday be made as before. I would remind the organisers of this petition that it was generally agreed among the ratepayers to wait until the summer season’s trade was over t*4id gauge wthether t'he change-over would suit the majority of residents •in town and country as well as the tradespeople and their employees. Even though the change-over poll was carried by a small majority, it’ is not an excuse why a petition should be presented. The Government would not be likely to consider the matter favourably until at least a year’s trial was given the change-over t'o Satur day. Until such time as the Wednesday advocates can definitely prove that the change-over has been detrimental t’o all concerned, a petition would not be considered. From what I have heard, th e majority are well pleased with the Saturday 1 half-holiday. I i would like the organisers of the peti- | tion to make public their reasons fo r endeavouring to upset fh e result of the poll before the change-over to Saturday has been given a reasonable, trial. I am. etc,, “PUBLIC HEALTH.”
