SCHOOL BOYCOTT
FREE RAIL PASSES Demanded at Pukemiro (Per Press Association). HAMILTON, September 9. Fifty school children, residing at Pukemiro Junction, and attending the Rotowaro School (two miles by rail) failed to present themselves when the school re-opened after the term holidays. The parents of the children concerned held a meeting on Friday evening, when they protested against the alleged action of the Auckland Education Board in refusing to grant free railway tickets to the school children over ten years of age. They stated that, if the Board failed to grant free tickets to all the school children attending school from Pukemiro Junction, or, in the alternative, to erect a school at Pukemiro Junction, they would refuse to send their children to school. The number of children attending the Rotowaro School from Pukemiro Junction is estimated at 53, and a small percentage of them are under 10 years of age. This morning only four or five pupils put in an appearance. They have been “declared black” by the hulk of the children who have gone on strike.
