Mr. A. Glendinning will leave to-day on return to Huntly.

The death is announced from Wellington of Lady Caroline Bell, wife of Sir Francis D. Bell.

Mr. F. Langstone, M.P., who has been seriously ill, underwent an operation in the Wellington Hospital on Friday and his condition is now reported to be satisfactory.

The engagement is announced of Clement Russell, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Riordan, St. Albans, and Olive Marion, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Dalton, Methven. Miss Dalton was formerly assistant mistress at the Ahaura School.

The death has occurred at Gisborne of Mrs. Huriana Tupeka, who had reportedly reached the age of one hundred and ten years. She was a member of the Mahaki tribe, and was born in the Gisborne district, and had resided there all her life.

Mr. Alexander P. O’Shea at present cashier to the Wellington City Corporation Milk Department, has been appointed secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, in succession to Colonel Pow. He is a son of the late John O’Shea of Dunedin, and was educated at Otago Boys’ High School, and Victoria College, Wellington. He has had nine years’ farming experience, and seven years’ clerical experience in various departments of the Wellington City Corporation.

A pleasant social evening was spent at the residence of Mr. W. Howard at Dunollie on the 7th. inst, when the whole of Mr. Howard’s family with their husbands, wives and families, and a number of friends, gathered to celej brate the anniversary of Mr. Howard’s birthday. An array of presents indicated the esteem in which he is held. Mr. Bannister in a few w’ell chosen words explained the reason of the gathering and asked all present to toast to the health of Mr. Howard, who, on rising to respond was greeted with applause. Reminiscences and songs occupied the evening, while all present partook of a generous spread, the gathering being a most enjoyable one for all present.
