Tennent presiding over a very small attendance of members. A candi date produced the necessary doctor’s certificate and was duly initiated into the Order, and a further two were ballotted for and will be initiated at next meeting. The Lodge Surgeon reported on sick brothers and sick pay amounting to £3l 4s 8d was passed for payment. Four maternity claims were received and the amounts passed for payment.

As the result of the Dominion-wide check-up on the brakes and lights of motor vehicles, 500 vehicles were examined in the Grey district out of about 1500, and 34 were found to have defective brakes, the County Clerk (Mr M. Keating) reported to the meeting of the Grey County Council yesterday, when the Highways Board advised that it had been decided to extend the period of the check up until the end of this month, as wet weather through out the Dominion had interfered with the work, while it was also considered that a month was not sufficient for a thorough check-up. Ltd., Greymouth, valued at l/6d, on September" 7th. He was further charged that on May 6th, 1935, at Auckland, with intent to defraud he obtained from Benjamin Crocker, one pair gum boots, one pair boots and £6/6/1 in cash, by means of false pretences, to wit, a valueless cheque for £B/6/drawn on the National Bank of NewZealand, Auckland. On the aplieation of Detective-Sergeant H E. Knight, accused who was arrested on Saturday, was remanded in custody until September 16th.
